Tell GM to Offer Real Hybrid Solutions Today

Target: G. Richard Wagoner, Chairman and CEO of the General Motors Corporation
Sponsored by: Union of Concerned Scientists

Hybrid technology has the potential to provide us with cleaner, more fuel-efficient options in every vehicle class, as exemplified by the Ford Escape Hybrid, Honda Civic Hybrid, and Toyota Prius.

On March 20, General Motors (GM) vice chairman Bob Lutz admitted at the New York Auto Show that not making a vehicle like the Prius was "a mistake."

Yet GM continues to make that same mistake. Its new "two mode" hybrid SUVs, the Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon Hybrids, actually feature larger gasoline engines than most conventional versions of these models. The electric motor provides an additional power boost but only a modest gain in overall fuel economy.

Please write to chairman and chief executive officer, Richard Wagoner. Let him know that General Motors can only be a true market leader if his company uses hybrid technology to its fullest potential.

Dear Mr. Wagoner:

Your company recently launched an online initiative to solicit dialogue with consumers. With that in mind, I am writing to express my concerns regarding General Motors' use of hybrid technologies.

As gas prices continue to skyrocket, and we face the threat of dangerous global warming, I am disappointed that GM has decided to use its hybrid technology to boost vehicle power instead of boosting fuel economy. By attaching hybrid technology to larger, gas-thirsty gasoline engines on your Yukon and Tahoe Hybrid models, GM has chosen to boost muscle instead of miles.

GM vice chairman Bob Lutz recently admitted at the New York Auto Show that not making a vehicle like the Prius was "a mistake." Yet GM continues to make that same mistake with its current hybrid models by focusing today's technology on power instead of fuel economy. If GM instead focused on giving consumers efficient options in every vehicle class using both conventional and hybrid technologies, it could emerge once again as a genuine automotive leader.
We sent a letter to GM supporting hybrid technology!

The technology is available now! Why wait 15 to 20 years. GM should be at the vanguard of cars w/ hybrid motor power over Toyota, Nissan, etc.

Why do foreign car makers always lead the way when it comes to innovation and superior quality?? NO more monster gas guzzlers and CO2 polluters!

I've waited for several years to purchase a new car, hoping that an American company would have realistic hybrid options. Since that has not happened, I'm buying a Prius this summer--like three of friends have done in the past few months. Nelda McCabe

It is extremely important that we make the transfer from gas guzzlers to more effecient vehicles because not only does it have a MAJOR impact on our environment but people will will get tired of the rising gas prices and they will want to find vehicles that will save them money and that is one thing you are not doing. Personally, I wouldn't want to buy a car from your company.

The entire concept of the hybrid car arose as a result of trying to be more eco-friendly, a literal stepping stone to the future of clean gas so that our planet could finally start to heal. By taking a lateral move to try and use hybrid technology for purposes of boosting engine power as well as profits in order to satisfy gasoline thirsty citizens, GM has lost sight of the reason why hybrid cars and future non-gasoline operated vehicles are such critical tools in helping improve our already dying planet. A message to you, Bob Lutz, don't misuse such precious inventions for personal profit -- think of your fellow human brothers and sisters, and the need for all of us to finally start making changes for the better so that our children could live long, healthy and prosperous lives on the beautiful planet that may now belong to us but will soon belong to them.

GM destroyed our mass transit systems decades ago and now they are suffering from pushing Silly Useless Vehicles when they should be producing fuel efficient and durable vehicles. Dumb and dumber. This isn't rocket science. Build more efficient, longer lasting cars and you will be back in business.

Like we need another example of how money and greed are ruining this country. It's really pathetic that we (citizens of USA) have to write letters like this. We should've had fuel efficient cars now for at least 30 years. Don't tell me we can send men to the moon but we don't know how to stop this endless cycle we are caught up in. It all boils down to oil companies wanting us to stay dependent on oil for fuel as it's So So good for their pocket books but not so good for ours.

I've supported GM by buying GM cars for years, but as a patriotic American, my next vehicle will be electric or VERY high mileage.

Get competitive with the hybrids like prius and honda hybrids. If you're catering to the consumer and not the oil companies I know you can engineer several different hybrids.

It is a shame that the American automotive manufacturer can not compete with the Toyota Prius. I am currently in the market for a hybrid and if one of equal efficiency was available from GM, I would consider purchasing it that model over the Toyota. But with todays gas prices, it is hard to argue with the facts that the Prius get 45-48 miles per gallon.

If you made cars that got incredible mileage, think of how many you could sell! NOW is the time, not 20 years from now. I will be looking to purchase whatever car I can that gets the best mileage very soon. If it is a GM than I shall purchase your car. If not than probably the Toyota Prius. Think about it, its your decision.
