Protect Our Marine Ecosystems From Offshore Oil Spills

Target: U.S. Minerals Management Service
Sponsored by: Defenders of Wildlife

The Bush/Cheney Administration has launched an all-out push to line our coasts with oil rigs that would pollute our waters, threaten dolphins and other marine wildlife and wreck coastal economies.

According to federal energy officials, such drilling will have "no significant" impact on prices at the gas pump. But offshore drilling contaminates water, routinely spilling oil and toxic liquids into our oceans and releasing hazardous fumes into our air. It would have a significant impact on dolphins, sea turtles and other marine wildlife that need healthy oceans.

The danger of contamination is even greater in waters prone to tropical storms and hurricanes. Hurricanes Katrina and Rita resulted in 124 separate spills and more than 740,000 gallons of petroleum products spilled into the Gulf of Mexico and fragile wetlands.

We only have until September 15th to stop this awful plan! Please sign our letter below urging the Minerals Management Service to shelve the Bush/Cheney proposal for more harmful offshore drilling.

Re: 5-Year Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Oil and Gas Leasing Program

As a supporter of Defenders of Wildlife and someone concerned about America's energy future, I am writing to express my opposition to the Minerals Management Service's (MMS) new 5-year Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) leasing program proposed for 2010 to 2015.

[Your comments will be added here]

Specifically, I strongly oppose any new leasing in areas that are currently protected under the Congressional Moratoria on offshore drilling. Congress approved this ban more than two decades ago following a disastrous oil spill off the coast of California that devastated the local economy and local wildlife.

The threat from offshore drilling is no less real today. Accidents on rigs are often due to human error, not technology, so the question is not whether an accident will occur, but when.

Don't think you are unaffected just because you are far away from the damaged ecosystems....there is no such thing as a "free lunch".

As a student of marine biology and ecology i see how important it is to have a health marine environment. I live on the coast and polution and possible oil spills are a real threat to the community and environment.

Healthy oceans as well as every other part of the planet are undeniably necessary for the survival of everything there is. The planet must be brought back into balance in order to re-establish the birthright of quality life for everything and everybody. The time has come to stop drilling and re-tool the energy industry to bring about the available technology for safe, clean and renewable energy. Action must be taken to put a complete halt to the eminent dangers of off shore drilling.

Underwater waste lands are what they are creating by killing everything and anything in the ocean that moves. It is a heinous holocaust that we need to stop. We can't destroy all life in the ocean and expect that we will have good fortune from it. We are tied to the oceans and the life in it. If we are not good stewards I believe that the disasters will increase. Wether you believe in God or not, if you kill all the life in the ocean it has an affect on how the ocean responds. Plus it is just plain wrong to kill everything. Most life should be off limits and fishing should be done in moderation. We need more fish farms and less plunder of our natural life in the worlds ocean. Do what you can today as we are all connected.

Healthy oceans means healthy animals. Not doing anything when it comes to animals is harmful to wildlife. Lining the oceans with oil rigs helps add to corporate greed with big oil.

There is no reason to continue polluting our environment when we have access to so much technology that can provide power with minimal environmental impact.

It would seem to me that governments ought to be working to clean up the mess in the oceans rather than adding to it.
