Compassion, Not Court Fees, for Aurora Shooting Victim's Family

Jessica Redfield Ghawi was just 24 when James Holmes opened fire in an Aurora, Colorado, theater in 2012, killing her and 11 other people.

Holmes came equipped to kill, with three different guns, hand grenades, body armor, smoke grenades — and 4,700 rounds of ammunition that he purchased online.

Seeking justice, Ghawi's mother and stepfather filed a lawsuit against the websites that sold Holmes these weapons sight-unseen. However, federal and Colorado state law bars weapons vendors from being held liable for murders and violence perpetrated with the weapons they sell, so a federal judge dismissed the couple's lawsuit.

Now, Jessica's mother and stepfather may have to pay more than $220,000 in court and attorney fees to companies who sold the bullets that killed their daughter.

Jessica's family has suffered more than any family should. Please sign our petition to Lucky Gunner and The Sportsman's Guide to withdraw their requests for court and attorney fees from this grieving family.

To Whom it May Concern:

I strongly urge you to withdraw your application for court and attorney fees incurred from the lawsuit filed against you by Sandy and Lonnie Phillips over the death of their daughter, Jessica Redfield Ghawi.

Your websites may not be required to evaluate a customer's mental state before selling them thousands of bullets sight unseen, but basic humanity should dictate that your attorneys not punish these grieving parents for seeking justice for the death of their daughter.
