Stop Hospital "Superbug" Infections

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Consumers Union

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that in 2005, almost 95,000 Americans developed a MRSA (an antibiotic-resistant strain of "staph") infection, and 19,000 of them died from its symptoms, such as inflammation of the heart lining and pneumonia.

What's more shocking is that 85 percent of those infected with MRSA contracted it in health care facilities, largely due to inadequate sanitation procedures.

Congress must pass pending legislation that would lower the rate of MRSA and other deadly infections, including a bill that would require hospitals to publicly report infection rates. Tell your elected officials in Congress to vote to keep MRSA and other deadly superbugs out of our hospitals and communities.

Dear [Decision Maker],

I am asking for your support of legislation to improve the prevention, detection, and treatment of healthcare- and community-acquired infections, including those caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as MRSA. Several good bills to address this problem have been filed: S2278, by Senators Durbin, Obama and Schumer; HR4214, by Reps. Cummings, Sarbanes, Towns and Wynn; and HR1174 by Reps. Tim Murphy, Waxman, Myrick, Boswell, Brown and now with a total of 47 co-sponsors.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly two million patients develop infections while being treated in the hospital every year and almost 100,000 of them die from the infection. These patients require extra care and often end up staying longer in the hospital to recover, which adds billions of dollars to the health care bill paid by insurers, consumers, and taxpayers annually.

Hospitals are places that are supposed to "heal" its patients, not make them sicker. This country needs radical changes in its health care system and it needs it now. One solution to this might be to no longer provide Congress with subsidized health care so that they can provide for themselves or not at all as do so many Americans.

why shoulden't hospitals be safe from any "superbugs". :"Superbugs" should be something you get from using a dirty needle on the street not from being in a hospital.

A hospital is supposed to be a place where you get treated for your ailments not sick with a "superbug" infection. This is kind of scary for people and that is why most rather not go to a hospital if they can help it.

I speak as a former victim of hospital-incurred staph infection. Ampicillin finally cured me, but now MRSA is deadly. Hospitals must be forced to higher cleanliness standards immediately. And they must be forced to report accurately. No more cover-ups! Shape up, hospitals!

A visit to the hospital is suppose to make people well, not kill them. These infections are getting out of hand, and are also infecting people outside the hospital. This needs to be addressed. Thanks.

My brother died from a staph infection on Nov. 16, 2008. My family and I firmly believe he could have survived if he had received the proper treatment.

It is a shame to have a captive audience subjected to more disease while they are getting well and make them sicker because the hospital is filthy and precautions are not taken to prevent these infections!!!

My mother has been exposed to MRSA in (2) separate hospitals at different times. MRSA is ramped in hospitals and nursing homes everywhere. Sanitation is important, ie washing hands, etc. I would like to see this and other Staff infections, C-Diff, etc. stopped but this may be impossible. All we can do is force hospitals to provide maximum protection for patients as much as possible across the board!

Hospitals are to be a safe haven from sickness. Instead you can get sicker in a hospital than any where. It should have higher standards of sanitation. There are to many people that work in hospitals that don't take the necessary precautions of cleanliness.

Hospitals should be a place for healing & not a place for contacting deadly viruses & "superbugs". Hospital patients & their visitors should not have to worry about the sanitary conditions of any hospital or nusing home while visiting these institutions. I believe more can & should be done to prevent any further deaths due to contacting these types of viruses while being treated in any medical facility.
