Protect Americans From Abusive Debt Collection Practices

Debt collectors are harassing consumers. Paid debts, incorrect debt amounts, and lack of documentation don't always stop debt collectors from demanding their money.

In a loan-based society, debt is getting tricky. America's average student loan debt is more than $26,000 and our average credit card debt is almost $16,000. Car loans, medical bills, mortgages--the list goes on for debts that are NOT always correctly documented or lawfully collected.

It's time to set an industry standard to protect consumers. Debt collection should be transparent and lawful!

In more than half of all debt collection disputes, debt collection companies did not verify the amount owed. Consumers deserve a detailed record of their fees, interest, and additional charges before handing thousands in questionable debt money over to bill collectors.

Tell Congress you demand the debt collection industry be held to a new standard. Protect vulnerable consumers from suspicious debt collection practices!
Debt collectors harass consumers for debt that has already been paid, debt nearly a decade old, or for the incorrect amount owed! If debt collection agencies expect exact payments, then consumers expect exact receipts with itemized costs.

America's total student loan debt is approaching one trillion dollars. Credit card debt has reached 798 billion dollars. Hard-working consumers cannot afford illegitimate costs and hassle on top of the debt they already owe.

Collecting debt from the right person, for the right amount, and with proper documentation should be protocol for every single debt collection case in America. Selling or collecting debt more than seven years old should be illegal, as it is too old to be reported on a credit report under the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act. Additionally, consumers should be properly notified of lawsuits regarding debt collection violations.

Protect consumers from flawed and faulty debt collection tactics!

Sincerely,
