Don't Let the Pentagon Get a Free Ride

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: IOUSA: The Movie

Why is it that fiscal hawks who complain incessantly about "government waste" seem to want to give the Defense Department a free pass? The Pentagon has become a bloated bureaucracy.

With the Department's budget exceeding half a trillion dollars per year including war costs, and with Pentagon waste in the billions and endemic, it's high time that our elected officials demand a full accounting of how this money is being spent. For too long, the Pentagon has been allowed to operate with poor financial management and little to no accountability.

We want a strong defense, and we honor those in uniform who serve our nation. But they are trapped in an inefficient and outdated system. At a time of record deficits and increasing economic hardship, there is absolutely no excuse for the waste and lack of oversight that has characterized the Defense Department for years, if not for decades.

Let your elected representatives in Washington know that it's time to show some leadership and finally start to cut waste within the Defense Department.

I urge you to take action today to demand the same fiscal responsibility from the Defense Department that we would rightfully demand from any other part of the government.

Sincerely,

Please support President Obama's stated intent to cut waste in government. Here is where there should easily be bipartisan support. Senator McCain has called for better procurement practices. We all have to live within a budget and how better to make our dollars go farther than to "shop" carefully and make sure no dollars are unnecessarily spent or somehow lost through carelessness.

Actual Pentagon spending is nearly 750 billion, an obscenely gigantic sum by any measure. The Pentagon has more money than all but nine countries in the world. We must cut back this disaster and use the funds to invest in our future.

It would be a great step if the Defense Department initiated a bugetary responsibility action among all the government agencies to lead all Americans to a new era of spending wisely.

It is wrong that are soldiers and their families get so little when contractors are exploiting the taxpayers, often with our government officials knowledge.

The trillion dollars we have poured down the rathole known has Iraq has not made us one jot safer - indeed, it has seriously weakened our security. The same with the hundreds of billions that have been curruptly stolen from the American taxpayer by the military-industrial complex. General/President Eisenhower himself warned us to beware of these people and keep them on a VERY short leash. Congress needs to begin looking at these expenditures with a much more jaundiced eye for it is this waste that is truely strangling the American economy. Cut the defense budget in half - it will make us stronger, not weaker militarily. Cashier the huge numbers of overly politicized officers in the military (especially in the Army) and send them packing. These people do nothing for our security. Close all the useless military bases (mostly in the South) that remain open only to provide places for career military retirees to play golf and sop up subsidized booze and groceries at the BX. I know these things for I am retired military. These things do nothing for our security - they only defraud the American taxpayer. If you truely care about veterans, put the money saved by doing the above into the VA healthcare system.
