Japanese SDF Out of Iraq / Protect Article 9!

Target: Junichiro Koizumi, Prime Minister of Japan
Sponsor: Global Peace Campaign
  • Signatures: 147
  • Goal: 10,000
  • Deadline: 12-31-2006
In the early hours of January 30, 2004, Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi rammed through the nation's parliament a special law on Iraq that would allow Japan's so-called "Self-Defense Forces" (Jiei-tai) to be dispatched to Iraq. Now an estimated 550 SDF troops are based in Iraq, presumably to shore up the United States' illegal occupation there. The SDF dispatch is unprecedented in Japan's post-World War II history and has been strongly opposed by the Japanese public. Under Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution, the very existence of a military in Japan is prohibited, and the dispatch of those forces overseas is in further direct violation of Japan's "Peace Constitution" enacted in 1947. We call on Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi to immediately withdraw all Japanese SDF troops from Iraq, and demand that he adhere to and protect Article 9 of Japan's Constitution.

158 9:00 am PST, Dec 5 Mr. Michael Trine Sodus United States As a patriotic and loyal American, I greatly appreciate Japan's support in Iraq. However I feel that they should withdraw their forces to their own sovereign nation's territory. As we all know, North Korea, or the DPRK, is an extremely volatile and rebellious nation. They recently tried firing a missile over the islands of Japan, a Taepodong-2 ballistic missile. Had they had the audacity to launch this missile this way, it seems that Kim Jong-il would attempt to push his luck even further. I do not however support Japan's Article 9 of the Constitution as it limits Japan's own strength with which to protect themselves. Japan is a very close ally to the United States and the U.S. will continue to stand by in case Japan needs military support. However the SDF can only do so much, as can we. I support the full militarization of Japan so that Japan can better aid the United States in the protection of Japan should it ever come to war again. And again, the audacity of North Korea knows no bounds and I would not be taken aback should they attempt another stunt similar to the test firing of the Taepodong-2 ballistic missile.

And the citizens of Japan should fire you for not representing their best interests and what they want. War will never lead to prosperity. You are stealing the true wealth of Japan through militarism.

If there was no more fighting in Iraq our economies would be able to improve. Prime Minister, please do not help Bush in this illegal war, as the UN...a body which may have prevented Wars, calls this illegal. Also to save Japanese life, please pull the SDF out of Iraq. Even though I am American, I disapprove of this war by the President of the US.

Japanese SDF Out of Iraq / Protect Article 9!

Dear Prime Minister Koizumi:

We, the concerned citizens of the world, stand together in opposing Japan痴 dispatch of 鉄elf-Defense Forces to Iraq. We are united in urging you to immediately and unconditionally withdraw all SDF troops from Iraq and return them to Japan.

At the same time, we stand together for peace and in support of Japan痴 Constitution, which in itself prohibits Japan from even having military forces in the first place. The two paragraphs of Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution, adopted in 1947, read in whole:

鄭spiring sincerely to an international peace based on justice and order, the Japanese people forever renounce war as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as means of settling international disputes.

的n order to accomplish the aim of the preceding paragraph, land, sea and air forces, as well as other war potential, will never be maintained. The right of belligerency of the state will not be recognized!

What is recognized around the globe, however, is that Japan痴 撤eace Constitution is an international treasure and a model for all peace-loving nations to follow. We urge you to do everything you can to protect and honor the spirit and letter of Article 9 of Japan痴 Constitution.

And once more, Prime Minister Koizumi, we concerned citizens of the world demand that Japan withdraw all SDF troops from Iraq, immediately and unconditionally.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned,
