Tell the Australian Government: We Must Do More To Help Syria's Children

It's not a five-year anniversary to be proud of. There will be no cards, no gifts. On the fifth anniversary of the Syrian conflict men, women, and children are living – and dying – in appalling conditions.

Right now, children are starving just a short distance from warehouses filled with food. Hundreds of thousands of Syrian families, many living in besieged communities surrounded by shelling, are cut off from the outside world and unable to get vital supplies. All the while, UN Security Council resolutions to allow access for humanitarian aid are being callously ignored.

Inside this ravaged country, more than two million children are out of school. For children still in school, 20 percent have to cross active lines of fire just to get to their exams. More than 5,000 schools have been attacked — from the bombing and shelling, to armed groups taking over classrooms to use as military bases, detention centres or torture chambers.

The Australian government has the power to help. Our leaders must do more to support diplomacy and conflict-sensitive education while providing technology and flexible aid to help communities survive until lasting peace can be achieved. With so many lives at stake, there is no time to waste.

Sign the petition today and urge the Australian government to do more to help Syrian children and their families during this crisis.
To the Australian Government:

I stand with Syria, and I ask that the Australian Government does too.

Australia must immediately:

  1. Use the diplomatic process to end the obstruction of humanitarian assistance and the attacks on homes, schools and hospitals.

  2. Support education in besieged areas through teacher training and conflict-sensitive education approaches including how to keep children safe in schools.

  3. Support besieged communities, both financially and with innovative technologies, to achieve self-sufficiency, while working to immediately and permanently lift sieges.

  4. Ensure that funding is flexible so it meets the changing need of humanitarian aid delivery in areas where conflict creates instability.

As we commemorate five years of conflict, we must ensure that the children of Syria are not forgotten.
