Save America's Ribbon Seals!

Target: Dr. Jane Lubchenco, NOAA
Sponsored by: Care2
The ribbon seal's Arctic habitat is rapidly melting because of global warming -- but President Obama's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has so far upheld President Bush's refusal to list them as threatened or endangered.

When they're born, ribbon seal pups can't swim -- nor can they survive the icy cold waters of the Arctic until they've formed a layer of blubber. So ribbon seal mothers give birth to and nurse their pups on the sea ice, until the pups' soft white hair (called languo) sheds and they naturally form their layer of blubber.

But with global warming comes melting sea ice in the Bering and Chukchi Seas -- and by extension, the disappearance of the habitat they need to reproduce. Only 200,000 of the ribbon seals remain globally, so they need federal threatened or endangered protection immediately!

Urge Dr. Jane Lubchenco, head of NOAA, to reverse the Bush administration decision and list the ribbon seal as threatened or endangered!

Dear Dr. Lubchenco,

I am dismayed that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has upheld the Bush administration's refusal to list the ribbon seal as threatened or endangered. With only 200,000 seals left globally -- 100,000 of whom reside in the Bering Sea -- we must do everything we can to protect this magnificent creature.

But global warming is threatening the sea ice the ribbon seal needs to reproduce -- making it all the more imperative that we act immediately to protect the species!

now this issue with seals and also any other specie in peril has me fuming!! the state of Alaska infuriates me the most out of all the states they have animals on the brink of disaster and the aerial killings must stop...without them alaska will see that their climate and very way of life change in a negative way...there is no reason and i dont want to hear its to drill for more oil again another way to slow the idea of becoming more energy efficcient...i realize it may be difficult to get all countries on board and we have our own issues here with the slaughter of bears etc the very animals that walked this earth before mankind,,,i am not a religious person but very spiritual and it pains me to see these animals going extinct...and agian not wait 20,30 or more years for change as it seems there is always a foolish reason to stall...people must start reading, exploring and do their own research...imagine an animal being slaughtered mid air, imagine an animal going thru excruciating pain while labs use these poor creatures for what they consider vital experiments when there are other alternatives...for those scientist i want them to feel what those poor animals do and jus t maybe they will get it....sometimes the more intelligent people the more ignorant, uncompassionate they truly are and all for naught
