Canada: Don't Abandon Your Lakes

  • by: Care2.com

Canadian Parliament turned its back on Canada's one million Aboriginal people when it slashed crucial protections to rivers, streams, and lakes running through their territories.

The same lakes tribes fish from will be even more vulnerable to Big Oil and industrial projects that have the power to degrade wildlife.

Canadian parliament completely ignored its consultation commitments to First Nations, slashing environmental protections on their land without even consulting Aboriginal communities. Aboriginal people just want to have a conversation with politicians about environmental laws affecting tribal territories, but MPs refuse to even meet with the affected communities.

Canada claims this environmental step backward will stimulate progress and growth. But in reality, it allows Canada's government to absolve its responsibility to culturally significant waterways that, without federal protection, will be easy bait for oil rigs.

Canada: Don't abandon your lakes, rivers, and streams!
Dear Parliament of Canada,

Every day, Aboriginal communities depend on the same streams, lakes, and rivers that you just made vulnerable to industrial degradation. Removing water bodies from the federal protection loosens the reigns on commercial interests that will step on the toes of wildlife and water quality without even blinking.

Canada's parliament disrespected every Aboriginal community with this environmentally irresponsible move. Consultation commitments to aboriginals were shirked even though the First Nations made bold attempts to discuss this legislation before it affected vital waterways in native territories.

Please honor your commitment to Canada's environment and Aboriginal communities by claiming responsibility for the thousands of waterways that drive Canada's wildlife and culture.

Don't abandon Canada's lakes, and don't abandon Canada's Aboriginal communities!

Sincerely,
