Stand Up for LGBT Rights in Houston

Anti-LGBT activists in Texas just dealt a devastating blow to equality in America's fourth largest city – and sent a wake-up call to every other city and town nationwide.

The Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO), which banned discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, was repealed Tuesday at the ballot box. Houston is now the largest city in the United States WITHOUT non-discrimination protections.

In the weeks leading up to Tuesday's election, anti-LGBT activists flooded the airwaves in Houston with deplorable attack ads – featuring slogans like "No Men in Women's Restrooms." Preying on voters using transphobic messages that perpetuated blatant lies, these groups framed a necessary non-discrimination ordinance for the City of Houston as a means for predators to dress as women and gain access to bathrooms for nefarious purposes.

If last year's onslaught of anti-LGBT bills in state legislatures is any indication, we have a long fight for equality ahead of us. We cannot let the loss in Houston set the tone for the rest of the country.
