Georgia Shelter rated one of the "Cruelest" among local rescue community. Help us stop the madness!!

Target:
Bebe Heiskell, Walker County Commissioner
Walker County Animal Shelter, (Georgia - USA), is in serious need of change. Local officials seem to think that it’s acceptable for the euthanasia rate to be in the 90% range.  Based on an article in the WALKER COUNTY MESSENGER 1/12/07, the new shelter manager stated that 9 out of 10 dogs and cats are being euthanized there TODAY.  This is a 20% drop in the rescue rate since the new shelter manager was hired 7 months ago!  They take in around 96 animals per week - you do the math!

TV media have been requested to "step-in" and break this story and its cruelty countless times. One media reporter told us that it was too far to travel.

The Chamber of Commerce touts of the "beauty and history" of this northwestern county, luring newcomers to "live and thrive" in this rural county. Made up of 8 independent areas; (Lafayette, Chickamauga, Flintstone, Kensington, Lookout Mountain, Noble, Rock Spring and Rossville), it contains the oldest and largest Civil War battlefield in the United States.  The history of the civil war is important to tourism, as is the reflection of the significance to the naming of Georgia's counties after our Native American people.  Speaking culturally, you may not be familiar with Walker County and its "not so good" history, as it is also known for some of the most horrific events, animal disregard is just the latest exposure.
  • In 1838, Chief John Ross House, chief of the Cherokee Nation had to lead the last of his people to their most certain death on the Trail of Tears. Yes it started in Walker and adjoining counties.
  • In  2002, national news coverage exposed one of the most disturbing incidents related to Tri-State Crematory, who you may recall was responsible for what was described as a scene from a Stephen King movie. Hundreds of rotting corpses were found on their premises in sheds, on the grounds, scattered through the woods. One report detailed a graphic scene of an infant's body which was found in a box in the back of a rusting hearse on the premises. Some bodies had become mummified and may have been thought to have been at the site more than 20 years!!!!!!!!
  • Today, February 12th 2007, the horrific events continue with the treatment in "life and death" of the counties domestic animals at the hands of the Animal Control Shelter.
Our agenda here is not political, rather it’s ethical. We care about the animals in Walker County, in life AND in death.  The shelter manager’s consistent unwillingness to work with rescue groups has reached a fevered peak. The cruelty and stories recounted from witnesses (i.e. horrific conditions of cruel killings) is unacceptable. One rescuer described having first-hand experience of witnessing a shepherd suffering for three hours crying in pain after being injected incorrectly with euthanasia formula.  Another speaks of a cat killed by being intentionally thrown into a wall as told by the new shelter manager on her watch.  The new shelter manager doomed a very adoptable lab to death because he had a touch of mange on his shoulder.  She told the rescue who wanted him "Spend your money on healthy dogs, this one will cost too much to save".  Former employees of the shelter will not come forward for fear of their family and animal’s safety.

The commissioner (Bebe Heiskell) seems to be highly uninformed; (or perhaps looking the other way) as she sadly thinks the rescue rate is somewhere in the 30% range. (Even that is too low)! Should she be held responsible? It’s your choice.  The current shelter manager seems very unwilling to allow anyone to come in and help her "move" animals to adoptable situations. She told one rescuer that she determines the "green mile" participants by how they greet her at their cages. If they don't greet her at the gate with tails wagging, they are euthanized!  The builder said there was no heat installed in the new shelter so what about cold, scared or timid dogs!  Why isn't there heat in this shelter?!

We wonder if the shelter staff and Country management should  be held to the same standards for animal cruelty? Under the current law for the state of Georgia, CODE ANN. § 16-12-4 et seq. -- last amended 2000, the statue summary states: A person commits the crime of cruelty to animals if the person: Commits an act, omission, or neglect which causes unjustifiable physical pain, suffering, or death to any living animal; knowingly and maliciously causes death or physical harm to an animal by rendering part of such animal's body useless or by seriously disfiguring such animal. Cruelty to animals is considered a misdemeanor, with fines up to $1000 per incident and imprisonment up to one year.

If you truly care about the animals of Walker county shelter, help us speak for the voiceless. Let's show them that the community of the "like minded" goes beyond the citizens of Walker County, and goes out to the concerned world!
  • Help us send a message to the media, and the County officials that they need to take note of all these acts of cruelty and find a compassionate group of rescuers; (shelter manager) who can make a difference in increasing the adoption rate in Walker County.
  • We need to  put someone in that position who is willing to work towards educating the public on spay and neuter laws, and giving these animals a fair chance to be re-homed.
  • Ask the Commissioner to hire a qualified individual to run this shelter who is willing to put the amimal's welfare first.
  • Inform the Chamber of Commerce Director, that this incident has influenced your desire to visit one of the most historical places in Georgia.
  • Ask Local Legislators if they know what is happening in their fair state.
  • Tell the media you won't stand for them not taking note to help use their resources to notify surrounding communities of these tragedies.

Absolutely no one at all cares. PETA has visited this place many times. The manager of the shelter just pays them off every time they visit with money skimmed off of shelter expenses, such as food for the animals (why feed them when you put most to sleep) medicines for the animals (again no point in giving them medicine, they will just be killed in a day or two) The only treatment they get beyond abuse is a .22 caliber bullet to the head, (so they can pocket the cash given for euthanasia shots) heck .22 shells are a nickel each or less sometimes on sale, shots cost like 20 dollars! Trust me, they will do or say anything to keep the cushy jobs they have there with all the self made extra benefits. Rest assured they take home at least four or five times what their paychecks are, all of it from simply denying and neglecting the proper care of the animals. I have seen them swear they will find a good home easily for an animal, then walk it out the back door and shoot it ten minutes after it was dropped off, tossing it in the dumpster. Many have tried to put a stop to this, but no luck for the poor animals who's only crime was to be unwanted. I mean, in today's society, if anything could be done, the same people, and management would not still be running the shelter a year and a half later, but they are. But hey, nobody cares at all. There is no way this petition will ever get 10,000 signatures before February 2008, the deadline to conclude this petition. They have friends in high places there in Walker county. Just face it folks, there is nothing you can do at all.Too bad you folks didn't step in and do something, this petition was a total failure. This manager is untouchable. Get over it.

When I worked at the Walker county shelter, there was a man there who thought himself quite intelligent, and thought no one knew what a devious mind he had, a man with a taste for "toys". Little did he realise however, someone sat back and watched it all saying nothing for years, noticing every little detail. Simply waiting.

We just had to get rid of Grandma's dog when we sent her to send her to a retirement home. We told her that her beloved dog Skipper was so much happier running free in the meadow, playing in the stream, frolicking in the sunlight and autumn leaves, eating the best food provided for him by the wonderful couple that gladly accepted him, on the beautiful farm we had taken him to. Well we didn't exactly lie to Grandma, it was just bullshit. We took Skipper to the Walker county shelter. Unfortunately, the retirement home happened to be right across the street from the Walker county shelter. Grandma soon realized that Skipper did not get to go to a farm after all, nope there he was right across the street as she looked out the window from her bed. She saw Skipper whipped with his chain leash, that she had bought him, kicked repeatedly, beaten with a tube sock filled with dry dog food, shot at least fifty times with paint ball, and pellet guns, a cigarette was put out on his snout, as he was held down, picked up and "body slammed" out back by three shelter employees, knocking out most of the dog's teeth. The manager came out and yelled, two employees vanished inside, a third remaining behind to wake the now unconscious Skipper by urinating in his face. Thirty minutes later, Skipper was barely back up and limping around a little, still soaked in the urine that had awakened him, shivered a little, whimpering in the direction of grandma's window, because he saw her in her wheelchair watching from the window, and boom! The back door of the shelter once again slammed open, knocking Skipper over, his head striking the pavement, and he tried to sneak away. The same three employees each came out looking pretty angry and muttering about how they got bitched out by the manager for "having a little harmless fun" out back with a stupid dog. Well these employees had nothing to take their aggressions out on, and cracked open a few beers. (in their drunken state they did not even realize Skipper was still alive) One literally tripped over Skipper and that was it. He quickly stomped on the dog's tail as hard as he could and ground it into the pavement with the heel of his cowboy boot, making skipper yelp very loud, alerting the other employees. They now had the animal responsible for getting them into trouble with their boss, the Walker county shelter's manager. The employee shouted "Well, well, well, here is the little bastard that just got us into trouble boys!" He kicked Skipper several more times across the lot, towards the other two, breaking Skipper's leg. The dog was then whacked with a golf club across the back, bending the expensive nine iron, further angering the employees. "That cost me five dollars at a yard sale!" one yelled. They cast away their empty beers, one threw the bottle so hard at Skipper that the bottle actually broke when it hit him, another smashing the bottle on a rock, ready to use the jagged end on the quivering animal. Further gory details are not needed. Just consider that Granny watched her beloved pet die a horrible death at the hands of the shelter employees, as she watched, unable to save Skipper. Man was she pissed at us! What were we supposed to do? We didn't want the dirty dog. Sorry Grandma, but what is done, is done. And hey, its just a dog, she has alzheimers, and will forget him pretty soon anyway.

Maybe we could get the animal shelter designated as a tourist attraction or give it some historical status.Might get your attention then? Seems thats all you care about in this county. Maybe we can get some positive action after this November.

The point of a shelter is to HELP animals NOT KILL THEM! People are loosing thier values, common sense, and respect. No wonder the world is going to hell in a handbasket!

I don't believe I will ever care to visit the Walker County Animal Kill, Mutilation, and Torture Center ever again. This place is the most horrible thing you can imagine. The stench of death is everywhere! Even in the winter! How can people do this to defenseless animals? They "solved" their cat "problem" by merely packing all the animals into an abandoned barn, and blowing it up with dynamite! Dogs were loaded up into a 16 wheeler and hauled off to a Korean restaurant in Atlanta! All of them! A whole truck full! Sure the restaurant owner got into trouble and had to pay like 500$ in fines, I am sure what they charged for their meals easily covered that, because another truck got loaded Friday! But apparently nothing was done about the "shelter" that provided the meat! get with it Walker County! This is a disgrace that has not gone unnoticed. Shut this place down now, before it gets worse, though I don't see how it could!

This is simply a total disgrace, and completely unneeded. These poor animals could be put into crates, and packed on a ship and easily sent to third world countries to alleviate starvation in other countries. We here in America have so much, and many have nothing. Why shoot these animals and send them to a landfill, or simply toss them in an incinerator? They could be sent to the far less fortunate than ourselves, and do a lot of good. The people of Walker county are pretty selfish to allow these unneeded animals to just go to waste like this.

I am a former volunteer at the Walker county shelter. In response to the comment below, I am sure I can add some light to what happened to your animals Miss, and I am very sorry to inform you: The dogs were all killed in fights held at the Walker county shelter, the cats were killed in the most horrible ways you can imagine to satisfy a sick fetish of the manager's, the employees deep fried and ate the boa constrictors, the rats and guinea pigs were all killed by the ferrets, as the employees laughed and watched, the ferrets were killed with a nine iron out back on the "animal golf course" and the pygmy goat was raped over and over so many times that its guts came out of it's rectum and it bled to death. I truly am sorry for what happened to your pets, I took no part in any of it, but I thought the snakes were tasty until they told me what they were. I don't volunteer there any more, and that is why. Thought you deserved to know the truth. I am very sorry

Goodness! They need to fire everybody here and hire Michael Vick, at least he wouldn't kill all the frikkin animals, just the ones big and strong enough to put up a fight! This is a disgrace, and to think, I personally took my twelve dogs, seventeen cats, four boa constrictors, eight ferrets, eleven guinea pigs, forty-seven rats, and my beloved pet pygmy goat to this shelter thinking they ALL would find a good home! What did you phuckers do with them all? I bet not a single one survived after reading the comments here! You butchers! I bet one of the employees here is that freakin serial killer that has been all over the news! we hear all about terrorist training camps, the Walker county shelter is nothing but a serial killer training camp! How can y'all sleep at night with the things you have done here, with your paychecks coming from taxpayer dollars I might add! You better be pretty ashamed of yourselves, because we all sure are!

I never believed a single one of these comments, they were so far fetched and ridiculous, I figured no way could the Walker County shelter me guilty of crimes of this magnitude. I always assumed that these stories and rumors we all heard around Walker county were merely total exaggerations, or they just had to be bold faced lies totally manufactured by shameless animal rights activists. Well, That is what I honestly believed. Until the day I personally heard far worse stories than any of these comments posted, coming directly out of the mouths of the Walker county shelter's manager and employees, after a "hard day at work" as they laughed uncontrollably, while sucking down beer after beer, at one of the local bars.

Maybe they wouldnt have to kill so many of these scummy litle flea bags if people who bought them actually wanted them. all the animals people brought to the shelter prolly did something bad and have it coming. Then you people get all mad cause they kill most of em, whell what do you expect em to do? find homes for every rotten little animal that likes to rip open trash bags and piss every where? give em a break, they try reel hard to find em homes, they look for like three days sometimes a week even before they blast em and dump em out back for the truck to haul to the landfil. what more can they do? they try reel hard to find them homes, they dont really care who takes em even or for what, just so long as they dont hafta shoot one.

People all across the country have now heard about the Walker County shelter. People have literally traveled thousands of miles, and in several cases, halfway across the globe to take their unwanted pets to the Walker County shelter. Why? Because the Walker County shelter knows how to punish animals RIGHT. NO screw-ups, every single animal PAYS for what it did to be brought here, be it urinating in undesignated areas, or perhaps deficating behind the sofa. Maybe a dog ripped up a brand new lazy boy recliner, and you want the little phucker to be beaten, oh say, one time for every dollar you spent on the chair, that some filthy worthless animal that YOU hated and only kept around because your WIFE made you, a thousand times YOU wanted to just shoot the little phucker yourself, but NO your WIFE wouldn't have that! Well lady, it took the scroungy worthless flea ridden little phucker RUINING a brand new lazy boy! I TOLD YOU well.... sorry to get carried away, the Walker County shelter knows how to torture an animal, any animal, and they will take requests of what you, the pissed off previous owner, wants done to the filthy beast....for a price, depending on how much you want the animal to suffer, but man, it was worth it! THANK YOU WALKER COUNTY SHELTER!!! You saved our marriage!

When I recently applied for a job at the Walker county shelter. The manager looked my application over for several minutes, then said "how about I give you a tour of the shelter?" I said "sure" We went through each room, and she spoke of what each room was used for and so on. We came to the kennels, and there was the cutest little black lab puppy! The manager said "want to take him out and play with him a little?" Again i responded "sure" well he was so friendly and playful he clearly really enjoyed the chance to get out and run and play and get a little attention. I was petting him several minutes later, the manager approached and said "isn't he adorable? isn't he just so excited and playful?" I said "wow he sure is, he seems to be having a great time!" the manager agreed "yes he is." I went back to petting the puppy, then a few seconds later the manager said "Here" I looked up and she was holding a Glock 9mm pistol. "Take it" she said. "part of your job will be putting animals to sleep, I want you to shoot the puppy" I replied "you have got to be kidding me" The manager said, "Nope, if you can't put an animal down, we can't use you." I took the pistol, and pointed it at the puppy. "I can't" i said and slowly lowered the barrel of the pistol to the floor. "well I guess you don't get the job, but thank you for applying" I heard myself say "oh, all right." I raised the pistol once again and quickly before I could change my mind, fired a shot into his eyeball, then emptied the clip on him. The puppy's brains, some fur, and a big smear of blood now splattered the kennel wall and all the animals were silent, watching in fear. The manager looked at me and smiled "you'll do just fine! when can you start?" I let out a sigh, "Monday morning" was all I said. "See you then" the manager replied, and added "oh and clean up that mess and throw the filthy animal in the incinerator before you leave, the bloody rags, and cleanup supplies are kept in the closet over there. Your time will be included in your first check. The pistol you keep, you will be needing it pretty much every day at work, you can just leave it in your locker when you leave, or take it home with you to shoot any strays you don't feel like bringing in, just remember, it doesn't count against our kill numbers until you BRING the animal into the shelter. Just bring in the ones you feel deserve the finest treatment the walker county shelter has to offer. And next time, don't waste a whole clip on one dirty animal, bullets are expensive, it only takes one, we will let that go this time though, since you are new." I felt horrible, but what could I do? I really needed a job, and at least it is just unwanted animals. I mean, come on, its not like people take Lassie to a shelter, it's the dogs that deserve it for what they did to get brought here. Could be worse right? At least I don't have to hurt any precious little kitties! Thank goodness!

Excuse me, but my daughter's comments are 100% true and accurate about granny's dog, and about the location. The Sunnydale retirement home opened on December 21st 2007 DIRECTLY across the street from the WALKER COUNTY SHELTER. Get your FACTS straight before calling others LIARS! Grandma has had a bad enough time with what happened to her dog already. DON'T insult her further by calling her a liar.

To the woman who felt the need to lie and leave the comment that her grandmas retirement home is across from the shelter....YOU NEED TO GET A LIFE!!!!!!!!! and find something better to do than lie...I know for a fact there is NOT a retirement home across from the shelter..I dont understand why people feel the need to lie about the walker county shelter..Everyone needs to grow up and get a life..I have been there and the staff and shelter was very nice..
