American Jaguars Need Your Help to Survive

Target: U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar
Sponsored by: Center for Biological Diversity

In May, the last known U.S. jaguar -- Macho B -- was unnecessarily, tragically killed by government agencies. This heartbreaking loss to the species, and to us, demands swift action to preserve habitat for the majestic cats.

If jaguars are to rebound, as wolves and grizzlies have, they need a federal recovery plan, reintroduction from Mexico to the United States, and protection of their essential living space.

The Center for Biological Diversity, a nonprofit conservation group, recently won a court case requiring the Fish and Wildlife Service to develop a recovery plan and designate critical habitat for jaguars. But instead of complying with the law, the agency is delaying by appealing the ruling.

Jaguars don’t have time to wait. Sign the petition urging the Service to comply with the Endangered Species Act requirements to save and recover the American jaguar.

Dear Secretary Salazar,

Please act now to order the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to develop a recovery plan and designate critical habitat for the endangered jaguar.

[Your comment will be inserted here]

In May, the last known American jaguar, Macho B, was unnecessary killed by Arizona’s Game and Fish Department. This tragic loss to the species and to all of us demands swift action from you to protect and preserve jaguar habitat for the majestic big cat.

Jaguars are native to the southern United States but were deliberately exterminated – much as wolves had been before them. But whereas wolves were promptly placed on the endangered species list more than three decades ago, the jaguar was ignored until 1997. Even then, the species was denied a recovery plan and critical habitat, both essential to its long-term survival.

Recovery plans are scientific roadmaps for bringing species back from the brink of extinction; critical habitats are the areas necessary for imperiled animals and plants to recover. Jaguars need both now.

So now it's Macho B, before it was Wolf 527. The Endangered Species Act needs to be READ and IMPLEMENTED with more than one species, but don't forget about The American Jaguar. The Jaguar is loved as a car. How about the living Jaguar, that has a natural habitat, eats, sleeps, and breathes, the same as the people who made the Endangered Species Act. All this wildlife being killed is pretty low in terms of human ethics. It scares me because when you kill and mistreat animals, my belief is, humans come next.

The preservation of this animal, the jaguar, is crucial. They need to be introduced into the U.S. possibly Florida where the panther is almost extinct. or out west in the U.S. where there is more habitat for them. Please do initiate a recovery plan for this magnificent animal.

WE, humans, think we have the right to manipulate, abuse and control everything not equal of our consideration. We are speciesist in every regard. In our patriarchial, utilitarian & fascist societies, the most vulnerable--the animals--pay the highest price. What does that tell us about the human race?

It is sad and discouraging when the greatest nation on earth has an unquenchible thirst for destruction. I am one of the many who feel that a nation will ultimately be judged by the way it treats its environment and the creatures of nsatural habitat. Of course the Jaguars are high on the list of concern, and they should be.
