All working people should be able to support their families on a living wage. But one institution, Vanderbilt University, stubbornly refuses to pay its workers a living wage even though the university president enjoys a salary of $1.2 million a year!
The unsung heroes that keep the doors of this institution open - groundskeepers, custodians and food services workers, among others - can't afford even the basic necessities for themselves or their families. This tragic situation affects not only the workers, but also their children, neighbors, and the communities they live in.
Despite having an overall budget of $2.2 billion dollars, the university won't back down from its inhumane policies. In fact, according to The New York Times a worker was forced into a homeless shelter because she couldn't make ends meet on her Vanderbilt wages!
We need to keep up the pressure until all workers earn a living wage. Tell the Vanderbilt Trustees that America's workers and their families must be treated with fairness and dignity. Tell them to pay living wages now!
We signed the “Stand Up for Living Wages for All Working People” petition!

This is so sick!!! Everyone should be able to earn a decent wage for their work. I have been there and I know how hard it is to try and make ends meet and to feed and provide for your family with jobs like this. It is a crime in itself, how such a such a place can continue these wage practices.

Shame on you, Vanderbilt. You know better than this. Is the value of what you save on wages worth the collapse of your reputation as a humane institution?

Raise salary wages for low to middle income workers. DO NOT raise wages for over paid CEO's and DO NOT raise the cost of living.
The income gap should not be disproportionately large, just because one was born into priveledge. Wages should be based on work hours, work productivity, experience and education. But less on education, because those that were lucky enough to be born into priveledge, are not ahead because of hard work. The harder one works, that more that person should be compensated. The harder the job, the more compensation. Merely pushing paper and sitting in meetings all day long, gambling with corporate profits, employee benefits, should not entitle people to disproportionaely larger salaries. Middle class people need to have a profit in their salaries too, just so that they too can purchase more items. Having a mass amount of people with extra cash will put more money into OUR economy versus that on the wealthy who spend most of their money over seas and on Non-American products. Their money, except in taxes - which of course their given sufficient tax breaks....however their money does not support our economy as well as that of the middle class. We should make more to spend more and to save more and to invest more.
