Support the WATER Act

Clean drinking water is a human right, but even in the United States, people have to worry about whether their water is safe to drink.

Our water pipes are getting old – some as old as Ford's first Model T. And too many are still made of lead. These aging pipes are putting the health of entire communities in danger – children's health, in particular.

The WATER Act – Water Affordability, Transparency, Equity and Reliability – would provide dedicated funding by closing corporate tax loopholes to keep our water and sewer systems up to date and protect our drinking water for generations to come.

Dear [Representative],

Safe water is non-negotiable. Access to affordable service is non-negotiable. Clean drinking water is a human right, and in the United States, people should not have to worry about whether their water is safe to drink.

Yet the federal government has slashed funding for water infrastructure upgrades, putting the health of entire communities in danger, especially children's health.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that $697 billion is needed to upgrade our drinking water and wastewater systems over the next 20 years. Nothing short of renewed federal investment in our nation's water systems is going to help us meet this challenge.

The real solution is the Water Affordability, Transparency, Equity and Reliability, or WATER, Act, recently introduced in Congress. This sweeping new legislation will provide a long-term, comprehensive solution to bridge the current funding gap by taxing offshore corporate profits in the year they are generated.

If passed, the WATER bill will secure a significant portion of what we need over the next 20 years to protect our drinking water and create up to 945,000 jobs.
