Ban Toxic Flame Retardants and Protect North Carolina Families

Did you know the mattress you sleep on, your child's stroller or changing pad, and even your computer or television could make your family sick?

These are just of the everyday products we use — and trust — that could be packed with toxic flame retardant chemicals like organohalgen.

These chemicals are a toxic nightmare and have been linked with severe health impacts, including reproductive impairment, decreased IQ in children, cancer, and immune disorders. Even more unsettling: children's products are more likely to contain these toxic chemicals.

The good news, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has the power to protect our families from these toxic flame retardants.

Right now, powerful coalition of firefighters, pediatricians, scientists, and citizens just like you are urging the CPSC to ban the sale of children's products, furniture, mattresses, and household electronics that contain these toxic flame retardants. Will you join them?

The products we trust and use to care for our families shouldn't make us sick. Add your name to the petition and urge the CPSC to ban the sale of products with toxic flame retardants.
We the undersigned are writing in support of the petition to ban the sale of consumer products containing organohalogen flame retardants. We are very concerned about consumer products that contain toxic flame retardants.

For this reason, we strongly support a rule that declares the sale of several categories of consumer products to be banned if they contain organohalogen flame retardants. Studies show that organohalogen flame retardants migrate out of products and into our homes, putting our families at risk for very serious health problems. We are deeply concerned about the evidence that toxic flame retardants are associated with neurodevelopmental impacts, including reduced IQ, cancer, reproductive impairments, hormone disruption and more.

We do not want these chemicals in our homes or in the products we buy. Fire safety is important, but there are better ways to achieve it that do not involve the use of toxic chemicals.
