Target:House of Representatives; Senate Sponsored by:Consumers Union
Since 2000, over 960 children have died in non-traffic related incidents such as back-overs and window strangulation.
The overwhelmingly majority of these victims were under the age of three and in 70% of the backover fatalities, a parent or close relative was the driver behind the wheel.
But automakers could have helped to prevent a great number of tragic accidents like these. Technologies such as rear-detection and auto-reversing windows already exist but are only available in high-end vehicles.
Every car should be made with the latest child-safe technology, and not be considered a "luxury" item.
Consumer's Union and other safety groups are working with members of Congress to pass bi-partisan legislation that will establish basic safety regulations and hold automakers accountable, ensuring safety devices like rear-detection and auto-reversing windows become mandatory features in all new cars.
After all, if automakers can prevent child deaths shouldn't drivers also be able to?
We signed the “We Need Better Car Safety for Kids” petition!

Why should this issue even come up for debate? To insure safety should be an automatic concern.

The safety of the children hasn't been the priority of the car-makers when the greed for money seems to be the number one goal. For once can we just start putting children first?

I am the mother of two small children. Car's are one thing that have always scared me with kids. I consider myself to be a safe driver but you never know when or where an accident will happen. I feel that our lawmakers should inforce some sort of sensor in a car to stop unfortunate accidents to happen.

Our law-makers should not even have to 'think' about this one. Not ONE child should be in danger if it only requires a 'YES' from them. The car industries pull in enough monies to make sure even the least expensive Models have all safty features available

All we ever hear is, "What about the safety of our children?" Well prove yourselves! This absolutely should not just be not be considered a "luxury" item for high end vehicles. YOUR CHILD or grandchild just may be traveling with someone whom you trust, but, may not be one of the lucky ones who can afford such a "luxury"... scary when it's one of YOUR loved ones isn't it? You need to re-think this very serious problem and then simply fix it.

Vehicles made for use on our roads must be made as safe as possible. Technology must be employed to sense if young children are around a parked car that is about to move. The cost is nothing compared to the cost of a childs life.

Automaker's should make rear vision a priority at no additional cost to consumers. I still feel guilty 16 years later because I couldn't see the ground as I was backing up and ran over my cat. Think if had been a child.

It seems to be a design trend currently to have the back end very high, higher than one can see confortably behind the car. I just bought a new car after driving almost all the brands and chose the one with the lowest rear profile so I could see if someone short were standing behind me. I shouldn't have had to search so extensively for such a design.

As much as America rely on its cars the absolute topnotch quality safety measures should come standard with every vehicle. Anything less is a failure on the car manufacturers part.
