A Demand for Justice Concerning Cardinal Christoph Schonborn's Sacrilege and Blasphemy

WHEREAS "the Eucharist is the heart and the summit of the Church's life, for in it Christ associates his Church and all her members with his sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving offered once for all on the cross to his Father; by this sacrifice he pours out the graces of salvation on his Body which is the Church.'" (CCC 1324); and

WHEREAS St. Paul the Apostle, by the authority of Our Lord Jesus Christ, admonished: When you meet together, it is not the Lord's supper that you eat. For in eating, each one goes ahead with his own meal, and one is hungry and another is drunk. What! Do you not have houses to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I commend you in this? No, I will not. For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, "This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. (1 Cor. 11:20-27); and

WHEREAS the Lord Himself testifies to the depravity of the marketization and profanation of worship by throwing the moneychangers and traders out of his temple, by his own hand, and condemning them for making his house a "den of thieves" and promising the destruction of said temple as just retribution for their crimes (cf. Matt. 21:12-16; Mark 11:15-18; John 2:13-16); and

WHEREAS the Apostolic Penitentiary reserves to itself the treatment of such grave sins as defiling the Eucharist, breaking the seal of the confessional by revealing the nature of the sin and the person who sought penance, having sex with someone and then offering forgiveness for the act by the authority of a priestly office, or committing the abomination of pedophilia; and

WHEREAS these sins bring automatic excommunication from the Church; and

WHEREAS Cardinal Christoph Schonborn is certainly guilty of the sin of defiling the Eucharist, having approved and been complicit in the sacrilege of Fr. Toni Faber, the pastor of Vienna's Cathedral, committed on the 29th of June in the year 2010 of Our Lord, which consisted in the celebration of a so-called "Western Mass" at the Danube Island Festival, which shall now be described: For the Mass the faithful sat on picnic tables, like in a beer garden. For the first couple of rows there were no beer tables. In the first rows, sat among others the organizers. They appeared in full western regalia. To the right and the left during the Mass beverages and grilled meat were sold. On the stage musicians played gospel music : during the communion "We are the world" from Michael Jackson was sung. The congregants behaved as if they were at a barbecue. At the picnic tables there were ashtrays. During the Mass, people smoked, ate and drank. On almost all the tables, there were drinks. Some during the consecration lay on blankets. A woman sunned herself directly in front of the altar. Another woman prepared and set up a meal, which had been brought by her husband. She then interrupted her activity to quickly stand up and pray. The sign of peace took place over half eaten food. For the communion Father Faber extended an open invitation to those attending the barbecue.

THEREFORE, this being the third time such a celebration has been conducted in recent years, with each instance of the blasphemous act having the full approval of Cardinal Christoph Schonborn and the whole sordid affair being caught on film by Gloria TV, we, the Catholic Church, the Body of Christ, declare the Cardinal to have excommunicated himself from our society. Furthermore, our declaration is strengthened by other crimes of said Cardinal, such as the celebration of a rock mass for youth with balloon-style confession, and by his ambiguous statements concerning human sexuality, and by his exceedingly poor administration of his provinces, as evidenced by the rampant dissensions from the Faith encountered therein. In accordance with the reality we proclaim, we ask that the appropriate ecclesiastical authorities amplify our proclamation. We also demand the immediate removal of Cardinal Christoph Schonborn and all clergy involved in his grave and blasphemous sacrileges from hierarchical office and rank, his and their permanent suspension from the exercise of all priestly faculties, his and their due requital by the Apostolic Penitentiary, his and their prompt and sincere public apology, and a written condemnation of his and their actions by Pope Benedict XVI himself. Until such a time as our requests are met, we pledge to disseminate the truth about Cardinal Christoph Schonborn to everyone and anyone, to refuse to sell or procure his writings, and to decline him all but the most rudimentary and necessary obedience due to his office and rank according to the dictates of canon law.

We the undersigned say, be it known that Cardinal Christoph Schonborn and those clergymen and laity complicit in his sacrilegious celebration of a "Western Mass," described in our petition and caught on video, have sinned gravely and should be dealt with according to our requests. We appeal to your wisdom, Holy Father, and we have faith you will deal with this scandal appropriately. May the perpetrators repent and be saved.
