Tell the Senate: Filibuster is NOT an Option

Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: NARAL Pro-Choice America
Anti-choice members of the Senate are threatening to filibuster some of President Obama's high-profile nominees simply because they've taken pro-choice positions.

The use of the 'f' word - filibuster - when referring to highly qualified nominees like Judge David Hamilton and Prof. Dawn Johnsen is unacceptable and will not go unanswered!

Urge your senators to fight back against anti-choice senators' attempts to block these highly qualified nominees. Tell the U.S. Senate to confirm Judge Hamilton and Prof. Johnsen without delay!

Dear Senator [Name],

As your constituent, I am writing to urge you to cast your vote in favor of confirmation for two of President Obama's pending nominees:

Judge David Hamilton for a federal appeals court judgeship and Prof. Dawn Johnsen for the Office of Legal Counsel at the Department of Justice.

These outstanding individuals are highly qualified and well-suited for these critical posts. I hope you will stand firmly against any attempts to block or defeat these excellent nominees.

Sincerely,

These nominees deserve an up or down vote. Our country needs to have these positions filled. That is non-negotiable.

Professor Dawn Johnsen may be the best qualified candidate ever nominated to head the OLC. The Republican and perhaps a few Blue Dog Democratic Senators should do the job they were elected to do and confirm worthy noninations.

Let's stand by Mr. Obama's choices because he's our President and I believe his judgment is correct and honest in selecting Judge David Hamilton and Prof. Dawn Johnsen. Good luck to them!

Dawn Johnsen is pro choice, so you oppose her because you think abortion is wrong - never mind all her impeccable qualifications. Please remember that your anti choice stance is in the minority. The majority of Americans - including me - believe the right to an abortion should be the choice of the woman involved. NOT YOU!

Surely, the Senate should be able to consider and approve the nomination of Professor Dawn Johnsen to head the OLC. The candidate is well qualified and if their opposition rests on a sentence in a footnote in reference to a legal decision, that is just another part of what the Republican Party has become known for, "the party of NO!! We need a positive approach to decisions.

These nominees are highly qualified and their confirmation is being blocked only because of their political convictions. For example, Dawn Johnsen's confirmation is being blocked because she argued against states having the right to prohibit abortions at public health institutions, because she is committed to overturning the Bush administration’s policies on torture and warrantless surveillance, and because she is committed to shining a light on some of the darkest skeletons of the Bush years. All of these are ethical and correct stances and commitments in my opinion and in no way constitute valid reasons to block her confirmation. Please confirm both her and David Hamilton without delay and in the future do not block the confirmations of other qualified nominees for invalid reasons.

I'm fed up with Republican stall tactics. Find a way to get around them and get these people confirmed. We need good people to get the real work done.
