Request Congress and the BLM to Strengthen and Enforce Federal Protections regarding Fracking and Methane Waste Rules in New Mexico.

Upon viewing the testimony of Kendra Pinto on May 24, 2017 regarding the Fire and Explosions at the WPX Well site in Nageezi, NM, I felt that it was imperative that a petition should be executed to prevent further harm/injury to the people residing in this region. In July 2016, there was a tremendous explosion at the WPX Well site, where there were 36 storage units storing oil and fracking fluid in Nageezi, NM. All of these units exploded and caught fire. Evacuation was mandatory. There are 55 Homes in this area. The closest Home, less than 350 ft. away from the site. Some were traumatized by these explosions. Many have not returned to their Homes. The oil and gas extraction in this region has caused air pollution and damage to roads due to truck traffic. The results from air monitoring samples taken near Lybrook Elementary school in Cuba, NM were distressing! Elevated levels of Hydrogen Sulfide were 7.6 micro grams per cubic meter. Long term exposure can cause Respiratory infection, irritations of the eyes, nose and mouth and throat, nausea, headache, and mental symptoms, such as Depression. Applying Federal standards, such as the BLM Waste Rule, these Harms can be reduced by capturing methane and other toxic air pollutants that leak into the air. It is also necessary that all efforts are enacted, enforced, and carried out to repair, erradicate, and prevent past, current, and future contamination of this Region in accordance with the Navajo Nation and it's Peoples and the United States of America.
Additionally, establishing a form of relief for those affected is obligatory. This should address and treat any Health concerns, Physical and Mental, along with Housing assistance.
