Protect America's Wild Horses

Federal land throughout the American West is home to thousands of healthy wild horses. Yet as herds continue to grow, Bureau of Land Management officials continue to trap hundreds of wild horses – condemning many of them to live the rest of their lives in holding pens.

Recently, the U.S. House overwhelmingly passed the Restoring Our American Mustangs (ROAM) Act -- a bill working to protect wild horses. The ROAM Act would step up fertility control measures, encourage more adoptions and provide as much as 19 million additional acres for the wild animals to roam.

Take action to help our nation's wild mustangs – urge your Senators to support the ROAM Act to protect America's wild horses and burros.
Dear Senator,

As your constituent, I am writing today to strongly urge you to protect America's wild horses from slaughter, and set more humane wild horse management policies. Passing the Restoring Our American Mustangs (ROAM) Act will help to save tax dollars by keeping our mustangs on the range and using innovative and humane management tools, such as various contraceptives to control growing herd populations.

For years Congress has been working to protect wild horses, yet have failed to properly protect America's wild horses and burros. As you are well aware, the ROAM Act overwhelmingly passed in the House. Now the legislation must be taken up by the Senate!

The horses' range land has been slashed from nearly 54 million acres in 1971 to about 34 million acres today. Supporting the ROAM Act would allow the federal government to buy and exchange land and enter into cooperative agreements with private groups and/or individuals that want to create wild-horse sanctuaries on private land.

Slaughtering healthy wild horse and burro populations to control populations should not be a viable option! I strongly urge you to protect wild horse populations and adopt new and humane management tools to control.

Thank you for taking the time to consider my comments. I eagerly await your response.
