Currently, animal advocates at the Guilford Animal Shelter in Greensboro is opposing a proposed new bill 617 that would allow exotic pet owners to freely give away the exotic pets they chose to adopt, even though there is currently no existing regulations on exotic pet ownership. Help us in our efforts to protect these animals by banning their ownership and giving them an improper forever home!!
Recent news surfaced in Greensboro, N.C. regarding a new proposed bill #617 regarding the ownership and transfer of exotic pets. Animal advocates at the Guilford County Animal Shelter have grave concerns regarding this new bill since the state currently has no license or permit requirements for people to keep most exotic animals. The state is one of ten that doesn’t regulate or track dangerous animals that people sometimes keep as pets.
If this bill is passed by the Senate, the animal advocates spoke person and director, Ms. Williams states that her concern is people will be buying exotic animals out of impulse and give them up when they realize they cannot take care of them. The animals would eventually end up in carnivals and fairs, which is not a fair scenario for their health and well-being.
Some counties in North Carolina allow certain animals with permits while others have no restrictions at all. Ms. Alboum of the N. C. Humane Society of the U. S. has concerns about the patchwork of local laws and believes there should be a statewide law against exotic animal ownership. She states that "It's hard to make legislators understand that these are just simple common sense rules. People should not be allowed to have dangerous animals in their backyard."
Not only should we prevent the passing of Bill 617, we need to encourage the senate to ban any ownership of exotic animals. N. C. State Legislators & Senator Trudy Wade – We ask that you seriously not pass proposed Senate Bill 617 and more urgently ask you to implement laws that ban all exotic animal ownership and care throughout all of the state. Laws need to protect these animals from getting into inappropriate hands, with full regulation and enforcement.
