Michael Vick, professional football player and convicted dog fighting ring operator, recently said that he'd like to own a dog again and that this would be another "big step" in his rehabilitation process.
In 2007, more than 50 dogs were rescued from Vick's farm. Reports surfaced of unspeakable abuse like hanging under-performing dogs and electrocuting them in his swimming pool.
Now, Vick has become a spokesperson against dog fighting and animal abuse -- an important step for him and for the battle against dog fighting.
But even if Michael Vick has realized the wrongness of his actions and learned compassion for animals, no dog should be used to test his recovery. A dog shouldn't be adopted to a a someone with a history of animal abuse, just as a child shouldn't be adopted to someone with a history of child abuse.
Send a polite message to Michael Vick saying that while you applaud his new role as a reformed animal advocate, please don't get another dog!
Dear Mr. Vick,
While we thank you for your decision to speak out against dog fighting and animal abuse, please do not own another dog.
Please continue with your rehabilitation and express your compassion for animals through your work as a spokesperson for animal rescue and advocacy groups.
Keep up the great work. Look what you've accomplished!
