Dear Congressmember,
In light of our national deficit, I ask that you not limit healthcare programs that support low-income and at-risk children as an answer to our nation's budget crisis.
More than 25 million children are currently insured through Medicaid and another 4 million are insured by the State Children's Health Insurance Programs. Cuts to these programs would be detrimental to the well-being of the 29 million children they currently serve particularly those children who have disabilities and who depend on these programs for the occupational, physical and speech therapy they need to live healthy, successful and independent lives. Rather than cutting health care services, Congress should be working to expand coverage to the nearly 10 million children who currently have no insurance.
Limiting these programs would compromise access to healthcare for families that would otherwise be forced to choose between paying for rent, food, and the therapy that their child needs to learn and grow.
Balancing the budget is important. But most Americans, including myself, feel that our children's health should always be the top priority.
Please support the preservation and expansion of safety-net health insurance programs for low-income families and children with disabilities.
