Changing the date of Memorial Day just to create a three-day weekend has weakened the day's meaning. We support the bill introduced by Senator Inouye which restores the traditional day of observance of Memorial Day to 30 May.
Mr. Inouye first introduced the bill in 1999 (S 189). He reintroduced it in 2003 (S. 70) in 2005 (S. 80), and most recently in 2007 (S. 70). Each time it gets read twice and then referred to the Committee on the Judiciary, where no further action is taken. Please help convince Congress to pass this bill.

Mr. Inouye: On January 19, 1999 you introduced bill S 189 to the Senate which called for the restoration of the traditional day of observance of Memorial Day back to May 30th. As you eloquently stated in you introductory remarks on the bill: "Mr. President, in our effort to accommodate many Americans by making the last Monday in May, Memorial Day, we have lost sight of the significance of this day to our nation. Instead of using Memorial Day as a time to honor and reflect on the sacrifices made by Americans in combat, many Americans use the day as a celebration of the beginning of summer. My bill would restore Memorial Day to May 30 and authorize our flag to fly at half mast on that day. In addition, this legislation would authorize the President to issue a proclamation designating Memorial Day and Veterans Day as days for prayer and ceremonies honoring American veterans. This legislation would help restore the recognition our veterans deserve for the sacrifices they have made on behalf of our nation." (1999 Congressional Record, page S621) Many citizens who have visited the US Memorial Day website (www.usmemorialday.org) have echoed your sentiments. Many have written in supporting the restoration of the traditional day of observance for Memorial Day. We, the undersigned, add our voices to this cause in support of your bill S 189. In addition, to keep the number of three day Federal Holidays the same, we recommend that Armed Forces day, the third weekend of every May, could become a three-day holiday. On that holiday we can go out and enjoy and celebrate the freedoms won and maintained by our Armed Forces; on Memorial Day we can solemnly reflect upon the high cost of that freedom. The Undersigned,
We signed the "Restore The Traditional Day Of Observance For Memorial Day" petition!

Memorial Day should be Celebrated on the traditional day of the year, the 30th day of May annually! Just as Veterans Day should be celebrated on the 11th day of November each year.

I am a veteran, civil war reenactor, and member of the Sons of Union Veterans. My father jumped at Normandy. Do not change our heritage, do not be politically correct. Please maintain some form of honor and dignity for our past and the Americans who gave their lives for this country. Is it to hard to honor or past and the service men and women of the present. Forget convenience, profit, and political correctness. Keep America free and our heritage intact. Leave the dates we honor our veterans intact as is. Bruce Mayhugh

Restore back to the original date and observance of Memorial Day. Paying tribute to all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

My grandfather was a vet and he was so proud to be an American. I believe that Memorial Day and the observance of it should not just be considered a 3 day weekend. There is so much more history behind it. Sadly enough as the generations keep changing the importance of days like Memorial Day will not even exist

It just seems like anymore they try to make things just to fit in to the schedules of certain people or to make the holiday always fall on a MONDAY so tjhey get their 3 day weekend.

I agree we've lost the full meaning of the Holiday because of the change to make a 3 day weekend.

My husband and I are Vietnam veterans and believe these veterans have not had the recognition they deserve. This new generation does not realize what it is to defend a country with human lives.

Memorial Day should be about observing and paying tribute to all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. It should not be a three day weekend and the beggining of b-b-q season. More emphasis should be made on the significance of this day, hence the name "Memorial Day". I also hate it when people say, "have a happy memorial day weekend!" I lost my husband in Iraq and Memorial Day is definitely not a happy day for me or anyone else who has lost a loved one.

I feel it is disrespectful for the focus of the holiday to be having parties and long weekends to sleep it off. If we don't remember and act accordingly we will be sleeping it off forever.

I was born on Memorial Day, 5/30/1974. In addition to celebrating my birthday, this day is a Attitude of Gratitude Day for me: lucky to be born in United States, lucky to have devoted citizens fight for this country while other citizens, such as myself, raise children to be the Leaders of Tomorrow. Return Memorial Day back to May 30th!!!

Every year on memorial day i try to make the trip to arlington national cemetary to visit the graves of the men i served with in vietnam. this is a day that should be used to remember our sons, fathers, brothers, sisters, and mothers who gave their lives in a princple we thought right. it is not a day to get a bargin at the mall. do the right thing, honor our fallen.

Like Independence Day, Memorial Day is too important of a day to consign permanently to a three-day weekend. As merely the third day of a three-day weekend, far too many of our fellow citizens give only brief thought, if any at all, to those brave men and women who died for our freedoms, men and women who deserve better than that.
