DEAR MICROSOFT: CHANGE THE MARGINS

Target:
Microsoft Corporation
I believe that a small change in habits can lead to a big change in the world. So here's a simple idea that could make a big difference to the health of our planet.

Please help me convince Microsoft Corporation to change the default margin settings in their Microsoft Word software.

The default margins for Microsoft Word are set at 1.25" on each side. According to the good people on the Microsoft Help line, there is no technical reason for this. It's merely a convention we have all gotten used to. Documents will print just as easily if you change the margins to .75" on each side. If you do so, you'll fit more text on each page...saving paper...saving trees...creating less waste. A nice side effect? You'll also save some money!

Of course, the goal is to get as many people change their margins as possible, which means making it as easy as possible to do. We can all change our margins individually each time we print a document, but let's be honest - we're all just a little lazy.

So let's make Going Green as convenient as possible. If Microsoft Corporation changed their software so that the default margins for Microsoft Word were set to .75", you wouldn't have to even think about it. One easy fix, one big change, one step to a healthier planet.

It's a little thing; it will save a lot of paper. You guys are geniuses. Myabe you gould create this as the default and create an "editing" mode for those occasions when we do need margin space in which to write.

I'm a Microsft Word user and frequently have documents I share w/ collegues and patients. I'd like to do it w/ a bit of a smaller footprint. Thanks for you consideration of this idea.

I strongly feel that anything we can do to preserve natural resources should be done. I make an effort to change the margins on my own documents, but sometimes forget. And there are, without a doubt, numerous people who don't think to change the margins and could ultimately be wasting an abundance of paper.

conservation should be the norm, not the exception. by changing the default margins on your word processing products, you put the onus of waste and destructive habits on the individual, not on the shoulders of your company. it will be the thoughtless individual who has to change the margins back to the obsolete margins. also, by changing the default margins, your company will be seen as a major leader (not a culprit) in the new economy, much like the companies who offer carbon credits. it's a win win change

i word process all the time and use all microsoft products. i have been changing margins on my own for several years.

Dear Microsoft, This is so simple, and you can make such a big impact environmentally, financially, and for your reputation, it is a no-brainer. People who want a wider margin can always change it. If you are concerned about disrupting people's work flow, place an option during instalation of your word processing programs to choose the previous default, or a smaller margin, with a brief, clear explanation of the reasons.

I've been narrowing my margins for years to reduce paper consumption. What a novel idea that EVERYONE could do it automatically, simply by using preset margins narrowed by Microsoft! Additionally, you could also change the default font to a narrower typeface, and decrease regular paper usage even more.

Thank you very much for decreasing the margin size in Word 2007 to 1" all around. That is a step in the right direction, but we want you to take a bigger step and decrease them further to 0.75 (I personally go all the way down to your "narrow" setting of 0.5, and have not had any printing problems). Thank you and Please save the trees Microsoft!

Please change the default margins on the MS Office applications. It is a simple change to help create an eco-friendly environment. Without the involvement of Microsoft, most individuals and organizations will not know that this simple change can reduce paper consumption enourmously.

For home and business, our family uses Microsoft Word and Outlook primarily, along with other MS Office Suite applications.

For many individuals, change is difficult and old habits, especially one's never considered or thought of, are hard to break. Sometimes, the changes that make the biggest difference come as the most simple, obvious, and easy to implement solutions. Microsoft has the opportumity to take charge and even make the simplest of changes to help many of those with bad habits or who are oblivious and make a big difference.
