On June 17, 2008, the Sarasota School Board voted 3-2 to demolish Riverview High School, an iconic example of the Sarasota School of Architecture designed by Modernist architect Paul Rudolph.
The school district plans to replace Rudolph's building with a parking lot. Despite preservationists' pleas and a viable strategy to convert the historic structure into the Riverview Music Quadrangle, the school board has failed to act in the best interest of Sarasota's architectural heritage.
Please ask the school board to rethink its decision and save this masterpiece of Modern architecture from the wrecking ball!
We took action on “Save a Masterpiece of Modern Architecture!”!

Sarasota should continue to embrace its incredibly rich architectural history. Rudolph's seminal school could be a rehabilitated point of pride, not a casualty of short term goals.

at this time in America our culture is reassessing what is important. As we shift our priorities, many of the buildings of the past, done well are emerging as important guidposts for keeping priorities in perspective in our future. Removing the best of these causes a loss f perspective for current and future generations.

Architecture should not be treated as a disposable commodity - especially in instances like this where the quality of the work merits preservation and/or adaptation.

Architecture is the stage on which we live our real lives. Space can define and enhance those lives. Architectural history tells a great story of those who lived in a place before, it attracts tourism and economic development for places fortunate enough to have that history. Modern architecture tells a story of optimisim for the future, the future of Sarasota will certainly be less important if that optimism is wiped away for the parking of cars.

Would you rather have your Names on a plaque celebrating a parking lot or the restoration and rehab of a masterpiece of architecture???
We all live with our choices!
Thank you for giving this further consideration.

In the interests of our future - it is tantamount to recall our past. As we "proceed forward" it is always the case that works become demolished in favor of "progress" that we later come to miss and long for. While it is understood that by holding onto the vespers of an irrelevant past are undermining for the future, this mentality merely displays the ignorance of the present condition. It is for the amelioration of the present mindset that Modern architecture be preserved as a medium for the future to learn and grow from.

Only a very small % of people appreciate Mod architecture, even though we are living in a socalled modern periode of civilisation
Dont destroy the evidence of modern life

Dear Sarasota School Board,
I understand that Riverview High School in Sarasota, an icon of Modern architecture by Paul Rudolph, is to be razed and replaced with a parking lot. This decision is disappointing, especially given that a feasible alternative was proposed.
This building represents a style of architecture specific to an era of American history and specific to Sarasota, and as such, must be preserved. Despite an outcry from around the world, you, as community leaders, have chosen to disregard the significance of this important building.
Modern architecture is an essential legacy of the 20th century and I would like to see it preserved for future generations to admire and study. Please reconsider your decision to demolish this great Modern masterpiece.
Sincerely,
Anthony Valerio

Architecture defines our lives, our values and our history. Once gone, it can never be replaced. As an architect, buildings like Riverview are a testament to the inspiration of mankind, and represent high achievement worthy of saving.

Though never anticipated by the community, the construction of a built public environment/building that has achieved legacy status, obliges the community to steward it as a cultural resource. This is done in the interests of transmitting to future generations the "the best that has been designed, built, and lived in"--paralleling the very mission of schools.

Sometimes the architecture most familiar to us is taken for granted. This building has deep architectural importance and should not be lost to asphalt. There MUST be another answer, use, solution.

I am an architectural professor who has visited the Riverview High School and found it to be a significant example of its era and the only large scale example of Rudolph's early work in the Sarasota area. Its loss would indeed be lamentable, particularly to accommodate parking!

While sensitive to the fact that I am not a member of the Sarasota community, I have reviewed the recent decision-making process regarding the fate of Riverview H.S. and encourage the School Board re-consider carefully the value of this cultural asset. This building if restored to meet Paul Rudolph’s initial vision embodies the design principles that today’s architects have come to recognize as the foundation of the sustainable, or green design movement. Demolishing a structure with this historical significance would be incredibly shortsighted and a major cultural loss.

I have made it my life's work to assist in the preservation of significant architecture, and currently this is one of the most egregious threats to an important and beautiful building that I am aware of.
