Saskatchewan: Declare a Medical State of Emergency to Help Combat Rising HIV/AIDS Cases In Indigenous Communities

  • by: Amelia Meister
  • recipient: Jim Reiter, Saskatchewan's Minister of Health

HIV/AIDS cases all across Saskatchewan are rising to epidemic proportions, prompting local doctors to recommend a medical state of emergency to deal with the increase. HIV/AIDS can spread quickly and the rates in Saskatchewan are almost three times that of other provinces.

Most of the cases are in Indigenous peoples making this an Indigenous health care crisis, especially because these communities often do not have adequate resources for prevention nor enough access to health care. The province's hesitancy to act in declaring a medical state of emergency denies Indigenous people the necessary help to prevent the spread of this awful disease.

Doctors are convinced that if this issue is dealt with swiftly by acknowledging the emergency that it is, HIV/AIDS can be quelled in Indigenous communities in the province. This must happen to honour the rights of Indigneous peoples to have appropriate access to health care.

Sign today to pressure Saskatchewan's Ministry of Health to declare a state of medical emergency for the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Indigenous communities in the province. By signing today you are sending a strong message that Indigenous health care matters.

To the Honourable Jim Reiter,

As someone who cares deeply for the health of all peoples in Canada, I am deeply concerned with the rise of HIV/AIDS cases in your province. As you must know, these cases are mostly in Indigenous populations who are less able to access the appropriate care.

I urge you to heed the recommendations of doctors across the province and declare a medical state of emergency in the province in order to bring more resources to the issue. Doctors are confident that this move could help quell the epidemic.

It is discriminatory to Indigenous peoples to not act swiftly to quell the spread of this awful disease.
