UK govt stop deportation of a Ugandan gay man and release him from detention

The UK government is preparing to deport Mr John Senyondo, a Ugandan gay man who hoped Britain would save him from the persecution he suffered in Uganda. Mr Senyondo fears he will be tortured, persecuted, imprisoned, and even killed because of his sexuality and activities of promoting LGBTI rights.

It is outrageous that the Home Office is deporting Mr John Senyondo back to Uganda, where gay people are at risk of imprisonment and mob violence.

It is unsafe for him to be returned, especially given his LGBT activism in Britain against the homophobia of the Ugandan government.

John is currently being held in Colnbrook Detention Centre where people are locked in their rooms at night, and during the day for roll-calls. There is no freedom of movement around the centre and the last Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons inspection of Colnbrook in 2010 reported significant concerns.

Mr John Senyondo is in a same sex relationship with Mr Michael Ofumbi. The Home office accepts this in their response, however they advised him to continue with his same sex relationship at a distance, after his deportation, through modern channels of communication like Skype!

This Home Office advice that John could continue his relationship via phone, email and social media is insulting and appalling. It is unreasonable to expect him to cease seeing his partner in person and to go back into the closet in Uganda, after having had a relationship and living a safe, open LGBT life in the UK.

We the undersigned, call on the British government to stop John Senyondo's deportation, release him from Colnbrook detention centre and grant him refugee status.
