Help Put an End to the Canberra Kangaroo Cull

Bludgeoning to death kangaroo joeys before they even have a chance to leave their mother's pouch is the brutal reality of the Canberra kangaroo cull.

The annual cull has divided the community. Animal welfare groups oppose the cull on the grounds that it is unethical and archaic in its methodology and that the kangaroo population is actually in decline, according to a report on canberratimes.com.au.

As the report states: "The reporting of culled pouch young began in 2014 despite shooting taking place annually from 2009. About 35 per cent of kangaroos shot in 2014 had pouch young, analysis shows."

"The following year about 41 per cent of culled kangaroos had pouch young. That proportion dropped slightly to 40 per cent in 2016."

Since the count began, more than 2000 pouch young have been bludgeoned to death. The government says the cull is necessary to prevent overgrazing while protecting 'sensitive flora' located in parks and nature reserves.

If the government wants to control the kangaroo population it should consider non-lethal alternatives such as birth control, relocation, and other non-lethal solutions, which are ethical and provide a natural solution.
