I Say No to Elder Abuse

  • by: HelpAge India
  • recipient: The Honourable Union Minister of Home Affairs, Government of India

Did you know that 40.2% elderly felt disrespected

and of those facing abuse, 53.6 % stated that they were abused by their own son followed by their daughter-in-law*.

Did you know that neglect is also a form of abuse for the elderly?

I Say No to Elder Abuse is a national campaign initiated by HelpAge India to focus the attention on mobilizing citizens like yourself and concerned organizations and to engage the government to enact change around the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day which falls on June15. Each year HelpAge uses this day as a platform to generate mass awareness on this sensitive issue. HelpAge India is convinced that genuine power, lies in the hands of the citizen.

The fact is, that neglect, abuse and violence against older persons -- physical, psychological, emotional and financial is very much prevalent, but often the voice of the elderly dies a silent death.

The process of ageing brings with it, a decline in the ability to heal, so older victims of abuse may never fully recover from physical or emotional trauma. The impact of trauma may be worsened because shame and fear, causing reluctance to seek help.

The 'I Say No to Elder Abuse' campaign hereby is a Call for Action to ensure Elder Abuse cases reported, are given high priority & action taken, and to strengthen legal efforts to eliminate Abuse.

HelpAge India recognizes the primary responsibility of the government in providing leadership on ageing matters and implementation of the National Policy on Older Persons.

Please sign this petition and join in our campaign to make this world safe for older persons. Please encourage your friends to join in too.
