NO OIL...NO SPOIL

Offshore drilling will NEVER be safe.

We the undersigned are calling on  The Bahamas Government to stop all oil exploration and to never issue permits for drilling.

On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico. On Earth Day the rig collapsed into the sea. At least 200,000 gallons of crude are spilling into the sea daily. Some scientist believe it is a million gallons a day.

The explosion which caused the devastating spill has left 11 dead and 17 wounded. The Gulf is home to 25% of the U.S. wetlands, It is one of the most productive fishery in the US which provides 40% of that countries seafood.

The "volcano of oil" has put thousands of marine animals and sea birds in danger, has crippled a 1.8 billion dollar fishery, has the capacity to cause extinctions, has put Louisiana's tourism on hold, and is costing Gulf States millions of dollars in lost revenue. Scientist say that deep water currents will be picking up the oil and sending it along western Florida to meet up with the Gulf Stream which runs between the eastern seaboard of the U.S. and the western side of the Bahamas.

Marine Biologist and University of Alaska fisheries agent,

Rick Steiner who has worked on oil spills all around the world said this;

"There's no way to restore a spill-injured ecosystem. There's really no way to rehabilitate oiled wildlife successfully, and there's very little way to adequately compensate human communities whose lives have been turned upside down by these kinds of things. So it's all bad. There's no good. The one potential silver lining to this disaster may be if we finally get the lesson learned that we need sustainable energy policies in this country."

If ever there was a wake up call concerning the direction human beings have taken on pursuing our energy development, this disaster is it. This
is an obvious opportunity to drive forward the clean energy revolution
in The Bahamas.
