We do not want to close the Department of Mediterranean Studies in Greece

UNIVERSITY OF THE AEGEAN

Mytilini July 7, 2011

Unanimous decision of Senate UNIVERSITY OF THE AEGEAN

The Aegean University Senate after debate on the draft Law on Organization of Higher Education published the YPDVMTH decided to make public the following:

The global challenge for universities today is:
- The dynamic integration of technological aspects and interdisciplinary perspective in their studies and research
- Attracting young and dynamic researchers and encourage them to join the academic community
- To create attractive conditions for curriculum and student life for new and young people nationwide, the European Union and third, especially neighboring countries.
With these objectives, the Aegean University marched from its inception and continues to be treading in more difficult regions of the country, the islands of North and South Aegean.
A draft law submitted by the staff of the Ministry of Education is moving in exactly opposite way. Impedes this process, moving in directions alien, trying and doing beyond the constitutional checks and democratic tradition.
The University of the Aegean, however, will continue to operate and perform the academic task within the framework of the existing constitutional arrangements.

The Senate of the University of Aegean urges the Government:

- To withdraw the draft law unveiled in YPDVMTH and build new relationships of trust and cooperation with the university community.
- To stop the slippery slope of government and party interference in the management and development of universities, interventionism that has distorted the efforts and the image of Greek universities. Do not extend this policy pathogenesis adding the business interventionism in the form of so-called celebrities.
- Do not pass the cost of financing the university students and students with an introduction fee or courses shorter and, consequently, less scientific and commercial value.
- To respect the working conditions and academic perspective of the members elected and serving the university community and not to discourage the attraction of young dynamic scientists to Greek universities.

More specifically, we believe that the proposed bill, not based on facts and objective analysis of the challenges of higher education at international and national level and not responded to similar problems because:
- It is contrary to the status of universities, constitutions, and self-government by introducing an authoritarian, centralized, and oligarchic system of government.
- Is antiakadimaiko, away from the ideals of education and replace quality education through training, through inadequate intensive programs, while three degrees will degrade dramatically the employment prospects of graduates.
- It is undemocratic, essentially negating the democratic participation and representation throughout the university community.
- Introduces a market approach to education, facing the University as a corporation and would contradict the complimentary nature of Higher Education.
- Introduces an individual working in a trading environment ever decreasing funding.
- Assigns responsibilities for critical research and management of university property to a private entity.
- Eliminate the concept of university asylum.

The lack of a strategy for education and research plaguing Greek society for decades, replaced today by sweeping horizontal contraction of the universities, which will occur in terms of "market" in place of terms of generating new knowledge, development and education needs of Greek society.

The Senate decides the Aegean University, accepting fully the decision of the Rectors Conference (Volos, 1-2/7/2011):
- Invite the whole of Greek and international academic community and the Greek society, to defend the good education
- To maintain a constant sitting around the next time and take initiatives for comprehensive information of Greek society at national and local level.
- To seek joint action with the senates of all Universities in the country, suggesting a coordinated response by the Greek universities where deposit or adoption.

The DMS was founded in 1997 and began operations during the academic year 1999-2000. Together with the Department of Education and Early Childhood Education & Training set up the School of Humanities, University of Aegean, which is housed in the old and new building of the former School of Gendarmerie, with classrooms, laboratories, libraries and offices teachers. More information about University of the Aegean and the various Schools / Departments are on the web page: http://www.aegean.gr

The mission of DMS, as generally described in the grounds of PD 316 (Government Gazette, no leaves. 223, 04/11/97) and the Feasibility Study for the Ministry of Education (30/10/98), is "to nurture and promote knowledge of the language, ancient and modern history, ancient culture, economic and political structures of the Mediterranean countries, with emphasis in southern and southeastern Mediterranean. The systematic study of issues: comparative linguistics and structure and evolution of the main languages %u200B%u200Bof south-eastern Mediterranean, economic, contemporary historical, political development, and ancient civilizations through excavations, theoretical approaches and the application of science to archaeometric methods, Mediterranean between the countries themselves and their relations with Greece. "

The study, teaching and research of these issues is unique and pioneering in Greek universities. The DMS has three fundamental scientific disciplines (skilled) in the last two years of study (semesters 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th):

1) Archaeology

2) International Relations & Organizations

3) Linguistics Eastern Mediterranean

The first two years of study of the DMS (semesters 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th) contain joint program of compulsory courses, while also enabling free choice of certain courses offered. At the end of second year studies, students / students will choose one of three offered scientific directions above.

The objectives of the DMS are:

which have been established by Presidential Decree 360/2001 (GG 244 vol A 22/10/01).

To strengthen the Department and harmony in the modern scientific spirit of the five statutory laboratories DMS:

    Archaeometry Laboratory (GG 177 vol A, 03/09/1999)
Lab Mediterranean Policy (Government Gazette vol 177, 02/08/2000)
    Computer Laboratory (GG 235 vol A, 10/31/2000)
Environmental Archaeology Laboratory (GG 124 vol A, 04/06/2002)
Linguistics Laboratory (GG 124 vol, 04/06/2002)

Since the recognition of Mediterranean Studies as a discrete domain knowledge in Greece has been recently, the research needs of this new field is greatly increased. The DMS is developing primary research in all sectors of interest to offer / students is /-only three of a high level of education. And for maximum competitiveness of graduates in relation to areas which traditionally are the directions of the Department (archaeologists, linguists, international relations).
The students of DMS myountai the value of research that honors the scientist with the disclosure of a high quality scientific publications and journals, marginalizing the mediocrity and developing their discretion to target and select the "excellent". In general, DMS cultivated spirit of modern trends and pioneering studies, with emphasis on practice and open horizons, challenging the authority and seeking informed opinions, aiming to create complete new scientists who will stand firmly, both at present and the future environment of rapid technological developments in the context of globalization. The increased needs created a geopolitical and international economic, necessitates the existence of strains with acquired knowledge and insight that will contribute to further development of the region, particularly in the disciplines of international economics, politics and diplomacy, languages, literature, literature and culture of the peoples of the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as communication between cultures.

When i first came in the island of Rhodes to study in the DMS i was full of courage, appetite to manage to survive as a student on my own in a place away from the family home, confident that you managed to get a degree from the direction of International Relations and Organizations.
Now..I am at the end of second year of study and I stand in my anxiety about what do with my life if it would wander for years without being able to be in a stable social group that has acknowledged my studies and my efforts in my workplace.
I want requirements of stability in my life when needed to continue the operation of the Department of Mediterranean Studies who loved already and I have identified with myself.

We would like you to know that we do not want these changes nor the closure of the section. We love the DMS because we are continuously evolving and because it has already put in human society big stars.
