Petition to Halt Encroachment by Montclair State University

We, the undersigned residents of the three communities surrounding Montclair State University, vigorously oppose any further development of MSU into our neighborhoods. The attempts of the University to enlarge roads and buy adjacent residential properties to accommodate the burgeoning student population will result in increased traffic, parking issues, loss of  ratables and ultimately HIGHER TAXES for all residents of our towns. We request that the university institute a cap on the enrollment of MSU at their present location. We further request the reinstitution of state oversight on the expenditure of public funds by the university with emphasis on the impact to the surrounding communities.  Finally, we request a community representative be appointed to the University Board of Trustees.

Thank-you for your support!

UNITED WE STAND !!!

Tri-town Citizens

Montclair State University (MSU) is located in Little Falls and Montclair NJ, on a 246 acre footprint.  As of Fall 2008, there are 17, 475 students enrolled. The student population of MSU has increased 25% in the last 4 years (Fitch http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0EIN/is_2008_Dec_5/ai_n31122849/. Growth is predicted to continue in the upcoming years.

The increase in student population came without the supporting infrastructure. Students are being housed in 3 local hotels,  there is a shortage of parking, the road system within the campus cannot handle the number of cars, and more classroom space is needed.  Entrances and exits for the campus are congested.

Neighborhoods are experiencing a negative impact from the increased student population.  The University is furiously adding new buildings to the campus. Many of these structures are built right to the edge of MSU property, increasing noise and light pollution, garbage,  and crime in our neighborhoods, while decreasing our property values and challenging our peace and safety in our own homes.

MSU is purchasing residential homes outside of its present footprint. These properties may be the site of a future development. They are pushing to have roads changed to accommodate their needs.  In the attempt to better the university, they stress our neighborhoods. They are adding pressure on densely populated neighborhoods that not only have MSU to deal with but  struggle with a train line into NYC, a local school a block away from MSU,  a major interstate highway and a two busy county roads.

If Montclair State University desires to continue to increase their student body, they need to explore alternative methods such as online education and satellite campuses.
