STOP the Sherway Power Plant in Mississauga / Etobicoke

This Gas Fired Power Plant would further pollute the air in an environment with an already over-stressed air quality. The proposed site is environmentally unsound. The site would cause, among other pollutants, carcinogens to fall on:

  • Trillium Hospital, Dorothy Ley Hospice
  • Condos at One Sherway, Summerville Pines Seniors Housing
  • Thousands of homes and parks in Eastern Mississauga and the whole city of Toronto, Schools and Playgrounds
  • The Sherway Gardens Shopping Mall
  • The Ecologically Sensitive Etobicoke Creek Valley

Opponents include Toronto's Medical Officer of Health, The Coalition of Homeowners for Intelligent Power, the City of Mississauga, and many more residents.

We are calling for an immediate stop to the construction of this power plant at this location!

We the undersigned - homeowners, ratepayers, and concerned citizens - in Mississauga, Toronto, Etobicoke in particular and the GTA in General - ask you to withdraw immediatley, by whatever means necessary, the Certificate of Approval for the proposed Loreland Ave. gas fired power plant.

The site is a terrible mistake:
This plant is in the worst location possible, on the banks of a waterway and adjacent to a hospital. It will result in terrible damage to people of all ages, to the environment and wildlife. Its plume will shockingly discharge carcinogenic particulate over Trillium Hospital, a nursing home, Sherway Gardens mall, unsuspecting new condominiums at One Sherway, and literally thousands of homes, parks, and neighbourhoods. This is a mistake that must be set right now.

Justification for Request:
The proposed facility would further pollute the air in an environment with an already "over-stressed" air quality. The science is irrefutable, and is in direct conflict with the perfunctory, inadequate and inaccurate environmental screening previously presented by the Proponent. Opponents include Toronto's Medical Officer of Health, who was one of nine (9) parties who requested an impartial review of the hurried environmental screening.

The government's denial of the review request (bump-up to an IEA) was never explained and inevitably leads to the perception that the relationship between the Government and the Proponent is improperly cozy. This perception is exacerbated by the fact that our requests for review were ignored by previous Minister of Energy for over 2 years, and that subsequently the request was peremptorily denied by Minister Gerretsen. Furthermore, the Ministry has a reputation of never, never granting these bump-up requests. This practice is not in the public interest. As indicated by Premier McGuinty with respect to this plant "It is never to late to do the right thing". Well NOW is the time to "do the right thing" for the first time.

We ask that you Withdraw the Certificate of Approval. Cancel this project at Loreland Ave.
