Rescind by-law that bans backyard wood-burning fires

08-10-24
Hello ,

Early in 2008 Kamloops City Council voted to ban backyard cooking fires. You were among the thousands of people who objected.

There will be a chance to have council change their mind. Let's make backyard cooking fires an election issue in the municipal election on November 15.

Backyard cooking fires was not a health issue. It was always about what Kamloops Fire & Rescue wanted. It was to make their job easier.

At a city council meeting, the Community & Council Services Committee was charged with finding a fair way to permit backyard cooking fires.  Under pressure from the fire chief, it ignored that mandate. Every innovative idea was shot down: "We can't support that--we don't want any fires on less than an acre". The fire chief told this to the committee again and again.

The committee gave the fire chief all that he wanted.

Let us tell mayor and council to reverse that decision. Phone and email all candidates and tell them you will support those who are prepared to re-visit that bylaw.

Better yet, come to the public forums below and ask in person where all candidates stand on once again permitting backyard cooking fires.

Original Petition:

In October 2007, Kamloops city council, in an unanimous vote, approved a by-law revision that outlaws the use of wood as fuel for backyard cooking fires.

The objective of this online petition as well as hard-copy petitions located at various locations around the city, is to gain public support to rescind this revision.

The deadline is January 7th, 2007 so please spread the word to fellow Kamloops residents.  Ultimately, to be successful, we need to convince five council members to change their mind.

Donna Kirkland is presenting the case to council on January 8th at 1:30pm.  If your schedule permits, please plan on attending to show your support.
