Allow Chickens in Caledonia, WI

We, the undersigned, support the recent proposal to the Caledonia Village Board, to allow residents to own a small flock of pet chickens.   Currently, only residents owning 5 acres of property or more may own chickens.

Chicken keeping is a very rewarding hobby and they make wonderful pets.  They also provide a more sustainable lifestyle as they take care of our kitchen waste and provide compost for our garden and eggs for our table.

The complete proposal can be viewed at http://www.caledoniachickens.com.  Specific details, based on a similar ordinance passed in Madison, WI,  include:
Keeping of up to six chickens, plus a clutch of chicks for up to 8 weeks, provided that:
i. The principal use is a single-family dwelling.
ii. No person shall keep any rooster.
iii. No person shall slaughter any chickens.
iv. The chickens shall be provided with a covered enclosure and must be kept in the covered enclosure or a fenced enclosure at all times.
v. No enclosure shall be located closer than twenty-five (25) feet to any residential structure on an adjacent lot.
vi. The owner obtains a license

We also urge the Village Board to act on the proposal in a timely manner.
