Ask the New UK Energy Secretary to Stand Firm on Wind Farms

  • by: Judith B.
  • recipient: Ed Davey, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, UK

UPDATE: Following a huge tax break for the fossil fuel industry, George Osborne is now demanding massive cuts on wind farm subsidies. It is more imperative than ever that Ed Davey stand firm on renewables.

The new energy secretary, Ed Davey, a Liberal Democrat, faces pressure from conservatives in the UK's coalition government. Despite not attracting a majority vote, Britain’s conservatives seem determined to destroy environmental initiatives.

Over a hundred Tory MPs want to slash wind subsidies, which could put jobs at risk, and increase energy prices aside from threatening the UK's commitment to cut carbon emissions. Such a decision would affect the entire UK, notably Scotland, where very few people voted for the conservatives to represent their interests.

Ask Ed Davey to stand firm on renewable power and not succumb to pressure from a minority government.

We the undersigned ask that you stand firm on environmental issues in your position as secretary for energy.

In particular, we ask that you not succumb to pressure to end wind farm subsidies, a backwards idea that would impact not only the environment but also those employed in the industry and ordinary energy consumers.

Please help to maintain the promise that the coalition government would be the "greenest ever" by not allowing counterproductive moves such as this to go ahead.

Thank you for your attention.
