Austin Pets Alive! is a very interesting no-kill animal shelter. They are working to make Austin a no-kill city. They also have some really cool events - including bringing available dogs to parks and allowing the public to "borrow" a buddy for a run or a walk. The phenomenon of overpopulation in companion animals refers to the large, growing number of homeless domestic cats and dogs. In the United States alone, between 3 and 4 million cats and dogs are euthanized each year because no one volunteers to adopt them.[1] As a result, most humane societies, animal shelters and rescue groups urge animal caregivers to have their animals spayed or neutered to prevent the births of unwanted and accidental litters.

Where there is pet over population, dogs and cats suffer from neglect and abandonment, deplorable living conditions, insufficient or nonexistent veterinary care, and substandard veterinary practices. Such animals are often victimized by people who treat them inhumanely, due to poverty, lack of knowledge of how to provide care, absence of animal welfare legislation and enforcement, apathy, personal beliefs, and intentional cruelty.

One contributing factor in companion animal homelessness is cultural preference for young, purebred animals. Many people prefer purebred, young, healthy animals, and choose to purchase animals of said description, often at significant cost, from breeders. That breeders continue to breed animals while animals are killed in shelters each year is a point of contention for many animal rights groups.

Recognizing the high demand for purebred animals, some people choose to engage in backyard breeding or operate puppy mills, practices where people breed purebred animals for profit, often without concern for the health or welfare of any of the animals involved. These animals may be sold through pet stores or directly from the breeders themselves.

Additionally, individuals seeking purebred animals may not realize that a homeless animal adopted from a shelter can have many advantages: often the shelter will have performed all necessary veterinary procedures, such as spaying or neutering, vaccination, deworming, microchipping, etc. Also, the personality of a kitten or puppy is not always an indicator of how the animal will behave in adulthood. Many shelter animals have reached adulthood and their personalities are apparent, allowing the would-be caregiver to select an animal with a personality that suits them.

Companion animal overpopulation is a major concern to animal welfare and animal rights groups. Companion animal overpopulation can also be an ecological concern. It is also a financial problem: capturing, impounding and eventual euthanasia costs taxpayers and private agencies millions of dollars each year.[2]

Personal View: buy and throw away socioty where life is less than cheap property or unwanted property and less than trash. The blood loss and mindset must change and international laws must be upheld to save lives.

There is barely a patch of soil in my south London garden that does not cover the remains of one or other of my children's pets. Here lies poor, dear Pippa the puppy, half Jack Russell, half springer spaniel, who died under the wheels of a car five years ago, flooding my house with tears.

Nearby, taking their eternal rest, lie Roger the rabbit, torn to pieces by a fox, Sparky the guinea-pig, Scratch and Sniff the gerbils and Fergie and Scramble the hamsters. Down by the shed, in an unmarked grave, repose the mortal remains of Sticky and Twiggy, two self-effacing stick insects, as indistinguishable in death from their enveloping earth as they were in life from the sprigs of privet in their jar.

But the grave that moves me most is that of Cuthbert the Siamese kitten, who escaped from the car when he arrived home from the vet a few years ago, and was promptly run over and killed by the van behind. Ten minutes earlier, I had written out a cheque for �18 to have him neutered. My grief for Cuthbert passed within a couple of hours, but the waste of that �18 still rankles to this day.

Re - additional Butterfly credits

As you may have noticed by now, a number of new petitions regarding the above have appeared on the Care2 web site. All these petitions relate to Care2 members wanting a choice to be able to redeem their butterfly credits to further help animals & the environment.

We (the members) are most grateful and thankful for the existing redeemable gifts available. They are an important part of why Care2 is so popular, there are are not many sites offering help in this way without asking members for cash donations. The Care2 site is a very unique and successful way of helping those less fortunate than ourselves. However, Care2 members would like the opportunity to help other causes, such as charities and organizations that can actually help save a life.

For example, a new Care2 gift scheme to help animal shelters by way of paying for adoption fees; many dogs & cats are euthanized due to lack of funds, which is terribly sad. This is obviously very distressing for Care2 members, who more often than not, will set about trying to raise funds to save those who have only days or hours left to become adopted.

Here are some of the ideas at the bottom of the page, which Care2 members would like to redeem their credits for, you have probably noted them from new petitions; which are up and running:-

Care2 members could help with all the above by donating their credits, which hopefully Care2 could exchange, in whatever way possible, to help Charities and Welfare Organization cover some of the costs involved with the above, i.e.

Poverty, homeless people, abused animals & people...

The running cost & maintenance of rescue vehicles & boats etc.

Bandages, theatre equipment, drugs etc

Animal crates, food, catch poles, leads, collars, halters, nets

Clothes, blankets, furniture, a bed for the night,

Groceries, toiletries, toys, helping the aged...

Although I do not know who or how the sponsors help but it is already possible to exchange credits to buy a shelter dog a toy; wouldn it be wonderful if those sponsors where able to help buy medicines or other life saving equipment to actually save a shelter dogs life!

Care2 has already shown that earning credits is a simple yet very effective way in which all members can directly help. If it were possible, the new options would certainly make us (the members) feel more empowered. Members will be more inclined to raise credits if they know by doing so; they will be helping those most desperately in need, perhaps organizations which members already support but want to give more.

Of course, we (the members) understand that setting up any new credit option must require a lot of time, research and effort from Care2. It must also be quite daunting trying to find willing sponsors who can also help. But all we (the members) ask is that you consider some of the ideas put forward for new credits and if at all feasible, make some or all of them available in the near future.

We can not undo the insurmountable damage that the human population has caused to our wonderful planet and its animals. But, we can try along with Care2, to help put right some of the wrongs caused by mankind. If we could actually save the life of just one animal through credits alone, imagine what sort of publicity the Care2 site would get through the media.

I am sure you must have noticed that many of the new petitions up and running have already gained momentum in signatures, faster than I imagined. Some have even surpassed the target goal for signatures but members just keep on signing; which clearly goes to show that Care2 members are really serious in the hopes of getting some or all of these new credit schemes, up and running in the near future.

I apologies for sending you the petitions in this format, as it is the only way I know how and never done petition work personally before.

However, by sending them this way, you will be able to see comments and news left by Care2 members along with other ideas on these petition sites. And of course you will be able to peruse all of the above at your own leisure. If you think any ideas could in any way shape or form become viable as credits; show them to the appropriate bodies of the Care2 Management team.

May I take this opportunity to thank you and all the staff at Care2, for all the hard work that has been put into making Care2 and it's a community the wonderful, caring site that it is. I look forward to receiving any comments or thoughts you may have regarding these ideas.
