The goal of this petition is to show the administration of Gettysburg College that the student body wants an open relationship with the administration in terms of financial and endowment information. The current "as per request" policy is insufficient and not properly followed.
Throughout the Fall 2009 semester a group of dedicated students researched endowment and financial information including the practices of other educational institutions. This project culminated in a presentation to several members of the administration addressing this issue.
Since the presentation last semester no specific actions have been taken. The Gettysburg College branch of the national student-activist group Students for a Democratic Society, or SDS, has since taken up this issue. In order to convince the administration to proceed with the proposed endowment and financial transparency we need to show a larger student support for the movement. This petition, along with several; on-campus activities, aims to increase awareness and support for this cause. If you have ever wondered where your $48,000 a year goes , this is the petition for you. Please sign this petition to improve Gettysburg College and its relations with its students and staff.
*Tuition relates to general finances and budget, and endowment relates to Gettysburg's long-term fiscal pool of stocks, bonds, cash, etc. These two aspects create our financial setting. They also tie in, since when annual revenue runs out operating costs must be taken from the endowment.
**Please respect this petition and refrain from any commentary not related to the petition or the movement. Supplying inappropriate commentary or other offensive material can only hurt our efforts. Thank you.

We, the undersigned students of Gettysburg College, request the attention and cooperation of fellow classmates, faculty, administration, and friends of the college in a campaign for increased transparency and accessibility in all of the college's financial endeavors. Specifically we believe there should be greater availability of information concerning key aspects of the institution's endowment campaign and comprehensible notes regarding the financial breakdown of budget information. By means of a more navigable website devoted to these subjects, Gettysburg College would promote more student involvement and foster an environment in which community-school relations could strengthen.
Many of the students involved in this cause are directly impacted by the movements of the endowment and the financial account, which serves to further the necessity of this information. This effort demands urgency, while the subject matter must maintain thorough, accurate information. In order to boost Gettysburg College to a leader in progressive, liberal arts schools while upholding our goals and values, we must promote this campaign and move in a positive direction.
Thank you for your time.
