German Shepherd Treated Like Road Kill

  • by: Myself

On Christmas Sunday night, my beloved German Shepherd, Takoda, got loose and was struck and killed by a car in Newmarket. I searched and search for her and posted up numerous flyers, to no avail. Finally, on Monday a good Samaritan who saw one of my flyers, called to let me know that he had seen a dog fitting Takoda's description being killed, and that a policeman was seen standing over her body.

I had called everywhere the night of and after I lost her, and found out she had been killed. I called OSPCA, Newmarket Animal Control, York Emergency Vet, York Regional Police etc, to no avail. I physically went to all those places on Wed, when they re-opened, and finally found out, at the YRP, that Takoda's body had been picked up by the York Regional Roads Department and, since she did not have a tag on, treated as if she were road kill. They told me they had buried her but there is no way I can be sure of that.

This should not have happened and I am trying to raise awareness to this atrocity, so that I can get as many people I can to help stop this from ever happening again to anyone else. THIS HAS TO STOP!

Takoda was wearing a black studded collar when she was picked up by the YRRD. It would have been clear to anyone that she was someone's pet. The YRRD did not contact ANY of the animal services and just dumped her off in the woods off some country road. They had NO way of knowing if she were micro-chipped or tattooed at all.

Above is a very condensed version of what happened. Please contact me if you would like to help and/or learn the whole story. We must spread the word: This CANNOT Happen Again!

Takoda's body was located on New Year's Eve, after much persistence and complaining. Her remains have since been cremated and brought home. However, the fact still remains that the YRRD could have had NO way of knowing if she were microchipped or not! No apology is forthcoming and they have blamed this on Christmas. No one is willing to comment on what the proper procedures are when an animal's body, which is obviously someone's pet, is picked up by the YRRD. This can happen to your pet! Please, help me stop this!
