Farra do Boi - A Bull Baiting Binge- is an aberration of an alleged Azorian practice brought over by immigrants who inhabited the Atlantic coast of the State of Santa Catarina in Brazil in the 18th Century.
Over the years this Farra Do Boi event has grown more violent and cruel, as the bull, always on its own, surrounded by a large, jeering crowd of men, women and children, is finally tortured to the point of suicide - the exhausted animal often kills itself by running into the sea and drowning or jumping off rocks.
The animal always dies because this is the high point of the Farra or binge the days leading up to Easter. There are many cases of animals dying this way, trying to avoid being chased. The pain,the fear and the suffering of these animals is the delight of the crowd that believes it is maintaining a spurious tradition that doesn't exist even in the Azores, the supposed origin of Farra do Boi.
This Farra do Boi has been made illegal in Brazil, but for vote-getting purposes, the politicians and the local authorities turn a blind eye instead of enforcing the law. This act of cruelty ensures the fate of an animal, already dying after hours of torture, agony and pain.

O boi, sempre um so de cada vez, e envolvido por uma multidao de homens, mulheres e criancas e torturado a ponto de muitos deles cometerem suicidio.
O animal e sempre morto no final porque esse e o ponto maximo da farra, que acontece com mais frequencia nos dias que antecedem a Pascoa. Mas ha inumeros casos de suicidio dos animais que entram no mar e se afogam, ou se jogam de penhascos enquanto perseguidos. A dor, o medo e o sofrimento desses animais e o deleite da multidao que acredita estar mantendo uma tradicao que nao existe mais nem no lugar supostamente de origem, os Acores.
Essa pratica ja e proibida por lei no Brasil, mas autoridades por motivos eleitoreiros fazem vista grossa e nao reprimem a farra. Quando o fazem, e sempre para sacrificar um animal ja moribundo depois de horas de tortura, agonia e dor.

We demand that the law be enforced, and that the government of the State of Santa Catarina carries out its duty in stopping this abomination and penalizing those involved.
We expect the State of Santa Catarina to be seen as an example of ethics and respect in its dealings with animals and the environment but this will only be possible when this cruel Farra do Boi ceases to exist.
Exigimos que a lei seja cumprida, que o governo de Santa Catarina realize seu dever impedindo o acontecimento desta abominacao e punindo de forma justa qualquer envolvido neste crime.
Esperamos que o Estado de Santa Catarina seja visto pelo exemplo de etica e respeito aos animais e ao meio ambiente, mas isso so vai ser possivel quando nao existir mais a cruel Farra do Boi.
