Palm Beach County/Singer Island Breakwater REVOTE

Petition to Palm Beach County for a REVOTE on current & future beach erosion projects

We, the homeowners of Palm Beach County affected by beach erosion, had a hard time imagining a 5/2 NO vote on the building of the breakwaters on Singer Island along with ANYWHERE ELSE in Palm Beach County. It appears that there is a difference of opinion between emergent or submerged breakwaters between the D.E.P. and the Army Corp. of Engineers which puts Palm Beach County in the middle. Their 5/2 NO vote was a surrender vote. WE cannot continue the permitting process - the County Commissioners must do it on our behalf.

The County Commissioners heard from several Department of Environmental Resource Management representatives, who have studied beach erosion for over 15 years, say that the breakwaters were the only answer they had to save the beaches.

The Commissioners were also told that the $30,000,000 for funding the breakwater project is already in place.

Finally, they were told that the results of their NO vote would produce the following results:

--NO FURTHER BREAKWATER DEVELOPMENT WORK IN PALM BEACH COUNTY.
--The Condo owners would have no choice but to protect their property with bulkhead seawalls.
--If seawalls are erected, the beach would eventually disappear (FACT).
--If there is no beach, the sea turtles would have no place to lay their eggs.
--With seawalls in place, the County would lose their beach access to replace sand.
--Property values will go down, reducing taxes to the County and City of Riviera Beach.
--If we lose the beach, there would certainly be a reduction in tourism.

Giving them the benefit of the doubt, we submit this signed petition by the residents of PBC and Singer Island to urge and respectfully request that the County Commissioners reconsider their decision and vote YES to continuing the permitting process with the State and Federal agencies.
