Remind them to repeal the "Lautenberg Amendment"

FELONY DOMESTIC VIOLENCE EX-OFFENDERS CAN GET THEIR RIGHTS RESTORED ~ Misdemeanor domestic violence ex-offenders CANNOT. Felons can get pardons and/or petition to have their civil rights returned to them, and may then purchase firearms. There is no pardon or petition process for misdemeanors. How does that make sense? WORSE penalties for a lesser offense?

"In July 1996 Senate Amendment 5083 to House Bill 2980 passed by unanimous voice vote. This amendment is now what we refer to as the Lautenberg Amendment. It prevents people with any "domestic violence" convictions from ever owning a gun. The conviction could have occurred long before the passage of S.A.5083 and may have been a misdemeanor." -guncontrolkills.com

(This "law" doesn't actually even APPLY to felonies, only misdemeanors.)

The right for all free citizens of this country to keep and bear arms was first written into the Bill of Rights and became LAW as the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution. The "Lautenberg Amendment" violates the Constitution by disallowing citizens to ever own arms again. Citizens who did not even commit an offense serious enough to warrant a felony assault conviction. To attach this penalty to misdemeanor offenders who have paid their debt to society is a heinous assault on the VALUES this country was founded on. MANY soldiers and police officers lost their jobs when this harmful amendment passed. These rights MUST be restored.

Right now there is no active legislation to repeal this law. The last legislation introduced in 2003 was never addressed during that congress, and the congressman who introduced it no longer holds a seat. In short, nothing is being done.

"Under the federal law governing possession of firearms by police or military while on duty (18 U.S.C. § 925(a)(1)), an officer under a current protection order, or even one convicted of murdering a spouse in the past, may legally possess a service firearm, but an officer convicted of one of the misdemeanor violations listed in the Lautenberg Amendment (18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(9)) is prohibited from possessing any firearms or ammunition at any time under any circumstances." -wikipedia.org

H.R.276
Latest Title: States' Rights and Second and Tenth Amendment Restoration Act of 2003

Sponsor: Rep Goode, Virgil H., Jr. [VA-5] (introduced 1/8/2003)      Cosponsors (10)
Latest Major Action: 3/6/2003 Referred to House subcommittee. Status: Referred to the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security.

(Rep Goode no longer holds a seat and this legislation may never be addressed. I spoke to someone there this morning. She suggested that we push for a new piece of legislation - so this petition will also be sent to members of the current congress.)

All free citizens of the United States of America should sign this petition. Right now, there are people who were convicted of "domestic violence" misdemeanors sitting in federal prisons because AFTER their fines, 2 years therapy, jail sentences, community service, and probation were finished they were caught with family heirloom firearms, guns for hunting, and guns to protect themselves, their families and their homes..

A person who grabbed another person's arm and was convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence is not allowed to own firearms forever, after their debt to society has been paid.
We, the undersigned are writing to urge you to introduce new legislation to  repeal the unconstitutional ban on misdemeanor ex domestic violence offenders' right to bear arms. (The Lautenberg Amendment) Felony domestic violence ex-offenders can petition and have their civil rights restored.  They may then purchase guns. Misdemeanor ex-offenders are banned from gun ownership for life. This amendment not only weakens the Second Amendment: it also makes no sense. Please address this issue by re-introducing H.R.276 introduced by Mr. Goode in 2003, or write new legislation to repeal this "law" with haste, and help strengthen the security of our nation.
