Save Royal Brompton Hospital's children's cardiac services

Don't let Royal Brompton's children's heart surgery stop
A review of children's heart services in England has recommended that Royal Brompton's cardiac surgery for children should stop. This is in spite of the fact that Royal Brompton's treatment is among the safest in the country, and feedback from patients and their families is very positive.

All other services will be affected
If heart surgery stops at Royal Brompton, all other services for children will follow - it simply won't be practical to carry on doing them. This is because without surgery the intensive care unit would not be busy enough to stay open, and the anaesthetists would also not have enough work to keep them occupied. But without the back-up of intensive care and anaesthesia, it won't be safe for Royal Brompton's clinical teams to do many other procedures or treat some of the most poorly children. This will affect all their patients - those with respiratory problems and those who need help with a heart condition.
