Community concern for hiring practices at Arlington Martin High

Dear Mr. White,

This petition was brought forth by several parents of student athletes at James Martin High School. Our sons were all members of the basketball program for the 2017-18 season. We are writing in reference to the varsity head coaching vacancy.

While it was quite a shock when Coach Schnell shared he was leaving, but we understand he is doing what is in the best interest of his family and wish him all the best. Not only do all the parents have a child currently in Martin Athletics, but collectedly we have parents that have been associated with Martin High athletics for many years. Therefore, we have a strong interest in the success of the athletic programs. Martin High is fortunate to have a very good group of student athletes in the program currently and most play on the national AAU basketball circuit. The AAU community is relatively small in DFW and news travels fast. Many have heard about the vacancy at Martin and have asked if a new head coach has been hired. Specifically, there is talk that high caliber coaches, with high school and college championship pedigrees are interested in the program. These coaches' interest has been piqued by hearing about and seeing our Varsity and JV teams play.

Needless to say, we have a strong desire for Martin to consider all qualified candidates, but in particular, give serious consideration to candidates with a record of excellence and success at the highest levels. While we are aware that there are several factors in the decision process, the community concern is that these candidates aren't even being considered. Our hope is that the search committee is able to take into consideration, both the needs of the school and commitment to the student athletes and make the best selection possible that affords our children the best opportunity to learn, and excel in both athletics and character.

If it would be helpful, the group of concerned Martin parents would be happy to share our thoughts or simply further explain our concern.
