The "Trump Dump" it's the opposite of the Midas touch. It means everything that Donald Trump touches turns to...well you know. And it looks like the Trump Dump curse has struck again, this time across the pond at one of his overpriced, extremely gaudy golf courses.
The Trump International Golf Course
in Aberdeenshire, Scotland was already controversial. Ever since he barged into the area
in 2005 with his dead set on building a golf resort. Residents weren't convinced and environmentalists were worried. The area is home to stunning environmentally protected sand dunes known as the Foveran Links
. They are an important ecosystem for native species and a stunning natural wonder. Yet, Trump promised to invest more than a billion dollars and create upwards of 7,000 jobs and finally convinced the community to give him the zoning variance needed to build on them in the protected dunes. More than a decade later, the jobs have yet to appear, and the dunes have been badly damaged. And now Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) has recommended rescinding the area's designation as a site of special scientific interest (SSSI)
. According to the Guardian
, the dunes within Trump's land were flattened, reshaped and landscapers introduced plants to the area that have stopped the dunes from drifting naturally. Just as environmentalists feared. The Trump golf course has been a disaster for the Foveran Links.
SNH will take three months to decide what to do with the area and that means we have three months to save them. Instead of rescinding their status, the Scottish government and SNH should force Trump to pay for dune restoration. He broke them, now he should pay for them to be repaired. Sign the petition and tell SNH that the dunes must be saved. Tell them to let them keep their SSSI status and make Trump International fix them.
