Save the Power Rangers- Make a Sequel!

On March 24, 2017, a movie reboot of the 1990's series 'Power Rangers' was released. It was given a modern spin, reaching out not just to young children, but the older generations who grew up with the show.
Diversity was a key part of this movie: four of the five main characters were people of color, one character had autism, and one was the first LGBTQ+ character in a big budget super hero movie. This type of inclusion is something that the media has been neglecting. Most characters in shows and movies nowadays are white, straight, and neurotypical.
The characters were also given more of something that the original series did not have: character development. The cast were each given personal problems and challenges that many generations can relate to and must overcome.
This movie spoke to many people of all ages, races, sexual identities, and mindsets. It showed that anyone can be a super hero, no matter who they are or what their background is.
However, the movie did not get rake in the amount of money it deserved. Once the movie was announced, many people assumed it would be nothing more than a nostalgic film paying tribute to the original, cheesy but beloved children's series. Many people complain that diversity is needed in media, and Power Rangers delivered. It's about friendship and family and inclusion and acceptance. A sequel will send the message that this is what the people have been asking for. It has diversity, it has depth.
Leaving the film where it is will almost be a surrender to the work put into sending the message that diversity is important. That is not a world I want to live in.
