Portales Police Department: Please reinstate the Animal Control Center 21-day hold to save lives!

This is Sweety. She is sitting in the Portales Animal Control Center through no fault of her own. She has a chance at life, but now that chance has been threatened!

For the last six months, due to a determined rescue network, almost all pets finding themselves in the New Mexico Portales Animal Control Center have escaped euthanasia and gone on to legitimate rescues to find forever homes. However, the City of Portales and the Portales Police Department have decided to ignore this huge success –– most rural NM pounds have an 80% kill rate –– and have reduced the hold period from 21-days to 7-days. This means thousands of dogs and cats will be euthanized for no reason.

Local volunteers and rescues have proven that with a 21-day hold period, they can save almost every single dog and cat found in the Portales Animal Control Center.

Why would anyone make the decision to stop this progress? Maybe they think people do not care if our towns and cities are killing cats and dogs for no reason. Show them that we do!

No child should have to live in a city where the pound means death. There is no reason to kill pets when we do not have to. You can do something to change this by signing this petition and showing Portales that we do, indeed, care!

To voice your opinion that these lives are worth the extra few days needed to have them saved, please call the Portales New Mexico City Hall at 575-356-6662 or the Portales Police Department at 575-356-4404 and ask them to return their Animal Control Center back to a 21-day hold period.

Please sign to speak for the voiceless!

We are more than halfway to our goal----almost there! Thank you so much for signing!!! This is a true example of a life and death situation. If they reinstate the 12-day hold, lives will be saved, if not, there isn't enough time to get all the unwanted, abused, neglected and homeless dogs and cats out and to rescues.

Please share, tweet, email, and ask your friends and family to sign!!

Portales dogs and cats thank you!!! 💖
