The science is in: diets heavy in animal products are hugely contributing to climate change.
In fact, some studies claim that animal-based agriculture is the primary cause of deforestation. Others say it uses more water than any other industry. Livestock production generates about 15% of global greenhouse gases, which is nearly equal to all the exhaust emissions of every car, train, ship and plane on the planet.
Despite this, the Italian Parliament is discussing a bill that would make parents giving their children a vegan diet illegal.
The American Dietetic Association states that vegan diets are perfectly healthy for children. The ADA notes that certain kids may consider taking nutritional supplements as well. This, however, does not legitimize the policing of Italian parenting into diets that require animal products.
If the Italian Parliament is truly concerned about the health of its children, it should begin with educating Italians on the healthiest ways to cut out animal products. Under no circumstances should the government be punishing parents for concern over livestock treatment and a warming climate. Tell Italian Parliament: vegan diets are not a crime!
